New 4 players Cabinet Build: Gaudium Maxima - worklog
« on: May 19, 2018, 08:12:13 pm »
I started building my 4th arcade box in April 2018, this time is a full size multi arcade / platform cabinet (my other boxes was just 1 or 2 joysticks only)
I was dreaming about doing this for a long time, and I have some draw down ideas on paper, I checked other similar projects to see if that ideas are actually good ideas or not  :D

Ideally the hardware will be like this:
  • Full Side Cabinet (6feet tall)
  • The cabinet will allow four players.
  • 32" HD TV.
  • Ultimarc Ultimate IO to handle buttons and LEDs.
  • Player 1 and Player 2, six buttons, Player 3 and Player 4 four.
  • Four Control panel buttons always On.
  • Start button for every player.
  • Coin button where the coin slots are located (no coin slots I hate them)
  • Printed art for the sides, controls and marquee.
  • PC hardware recycled from an old pc I don't use anymore.
  • Illuminated Marquee.
  • Rear Access to the PC hardware and connectors.
  • Detachable controls.
  • Storage Drawer to store gaming stuff I have everywhere.
  • 4 USB connectors
  • External volume control
  • Trackball
  • Custom wiring for easy connection
  • 200mm Fan in the top with a nice grill
  • Lock for the drawer and rear access

The software:
  • Linux OS, Ubuntu 18.04, most likely set by hand  ;D
  • Emulationstation front end
  • Mame
  • Some of my son's fav consoles (I hate them but my wife love them so I have all of them at home  :()
  • C64 Games
  • My ScummVM collection
  • Some linux games my son or I normally plays

Steps:
  • Wife approval
  • purchase cabinet material, wood, screws, nails, glue, etc
  • purchase arcade buttons and joysticks
  • purchase Keyboard interface board
  • Electronic components
  • Build Cabinet and paint it
  • Build Controllers box and paint it
  • Build marquee
  • Send art to print
  • finish details (art, t-molding, usb ports, bezel, acrylics, rear carpet)
  • build drawer
  • Build PC stand and put the PC on it
  • install OS and main software (drivers and some games)
  • install emulators and set artwork
  • setup software

Road Blocks:
  • Time to finish the software setup
  • RGBcommander not working correctly (was working fine until one day just start doing clicks with mame games)

Stores / Suppliers
  • Paradise Arcade Shop
  • Ultimarc
  • Arcade Renovations
  • Focus Attack
  • Game On Grafix
  • Amazon
  • Ebay
  • Home Depot
  • Lowels

Finished (almost?):

Art, wiring and finishing

I did the wires one by one, I like something custom, all the LEDs and the controllers.

Hey there, cool build and a quick tip. When posting your images press the "Insert Image" button and paste the photo link in between the 2 brackets. This will add the preview.

Also the last few links are dead.

Great looking cab.  I see you used a seven button layout for p1/p2 that looks pretty much identical to the one I chose.  It's a shame they don't have a seven coin layout similar to yours (and mine) on slagcoin so we could print it out rather than having to measure and 'add' that seventh button each time.  It's a great cross between Japanese and NEO-GEO layouts!

Quick question: Where did you source the plastic ring inserts for your joysticks?  I cut 1 1/8" holes for the joysticks but I wasn't sure how to finish the inside surface of the MDF.  It's fine with buttons because they cover the imperfections but with clear joystick dust covers the inside of the ring looks awful.  I need something to make the joystick holes look finished and I was considering using opaque dust covers as a last resort.  That or paint them black and hope the sticks don't make contact and rub off the paint.

I'm at the step where I'm finalizing design of my cab so looking at your steps and decisions was a huge help - much appreciated!

Literally scrolled through the photos to see if you angled the sticks... and I appreciated how you held off on that until the end... and you angled the sticks.

Seriously, though, he can correct that mistake underneath the control panel and nobody will be the wiser.  Drill some new holes and good to go.

It was in his design photos (had the slagcoin layouts with a 7th button) but I guess it didn't make the final productCUT.  {can't believe I missed that pun}

My original idea was 7 but then I found that I ran out of controller connectors, so I leave it as a future upgrade.

I got an acrylic rod when I purchased a led light strip for my pc, that, lucky me, fit perfectly, so I cut it and sanded to the final look.
Same issue here, the joysticks holes looks better with acrylic, also allow more light to came out, you will need something like that, on ebay you can find some cylinders like that, try there.
Check other projects for ideas on how to beautify them.

I'm at the step where I'm finalizing design of my cab so looking at your steps and decisions was a huge help - much appreciated!

Design is the most important step, take your time, and good luck!!. ask whatever you need.

I did several test on player 3 and 4 to get the perfect angle, I used two 10 years old kids to measure that  :lol

Many thanks for the replies meduza.
I'll have a look at Ebay for acrylics but I'm considering swapping my crappy 4-switch joysticks for something better.
Finally got my rig playable last night and while I can tolerate clicky buttons, clicky joysticks drove me mad.

I nearly have myself convinced to give sketchup another try.  My first attempt it just seemed overwhelming but I think the benefits are there.  I'd rather over-plan for an easy build than under-plan and end up with a crap end result.  I'm the sort that even small blemishes or errors can't be un-seen.  I definitely can never get a tattoo for that reason!

yeah I don't understand the push back on this from just about every first time builder of a 4P cab.  This is something that has been settled and shouldn't be up to "personal preference" - angled sticks are going to annoy everyone who gets stuck on the end.

People want to learn the hard way.

Or, the novelty of a 4P cabinet's prerequisite seems to only be to just have the extra controls installed, instead of actually making them properly playable.

But hey, first time builders think they know it all, so what-can-ya-do...

In this panel Player 3 and player 4 stand or sit in angle, I already tested it, and if I put them straight the kids does diagonals and the arm of player 4 will block button 5 and 6 on player 1,  anyway if I see issues in the future, is not a big deal to rotate them on any direction.

I been working on coding a new program to control the LEDs on the cabinet, that left me with no time, and the pictures I uploaded are not all of them, if you need more details or info about something let me know.

How does the arm of Player 4 get in the way? The physical location of the joystick doesnít change whether theyíre angled or not.

That raises the question, I wonder how much further up the joysticks are on the USS Nimitz as opposed to a traditional Konami?

Angle of player and buttons stays the same, but the joystick should be parallel to the screen.  It's counterintuitive, but the correct way.  Look at the arrows and bolt heads for player 3 and 4 on original games like Gauntlet, TMNT, Simpsons, NFL Blitz, etc.  People instincevely move the joystick in the direction they want the character to go regardless of the angle of their body.  They can adjust to playing on an angl d stick with time,  but WILL HAVE TO ADJUST.

Some of the people telling you to fix it have done the same thing themselves and regretted angling the sticks.  It's not just the old school curmudgeons hating on a different way.

EDIT: swiped generic eric's signature image and added some labels

This is some of the best advice you'll see on the board.  It's very important to recognize the difference between people who don't like your aesthetic choices, and those trying to steer you away from bad designs that affect function or construction.  If you're not sure which one it is, ask.  Joystick orientation has been brought up enough that it's safe to assume this is a function one.

Thanks for the diagram! When I first considered the positioning of my future control panel's joysticks, I thought just like Meduza did. I figured placing them at an angle made the most logical sense. But after reading countless posts on this forum I've decided against it. I'll go with what the experienced guys are recommending.

@Meduza please post as many pics as you have! Would love to see them. Here's what my plans look like so far...any suggestions? The red outline was the original side panel that i just traced. Then I modified it a little and added all my dimensions on the right hand pic in blue.

It's because he has Chance's Flynn CP design. I've been telling people about the indents in this failed design, elbows getting in the way of other players etc...but it falls on deaf ears all in the name of making the CP shape look different.

That CP shape has been perpetuated throughout new projects, and while aesthetically it's different from a traditional CP, functionally and ergonomically it's cumbersome to play on with all 4 players at once.

There's a reason why the traditional CP shape like in PL1's image above is a standard.

On a related note, Malenko's Broad Street Bullies joystick layout is even better than my diagram because he put all four sticks on one horizontal line.

That works better for 2-player twin stick games like Smash T.V.

So this design will actually give all players less room on the control panel? I thought I would get more elbow room for the two center players since they are spaced apart due to the trackball between them and because they extend out a little farther away from the screen compared to the outside players.

P3ís button arm, his/her elbow gets in the way of P1ís joystick arm, and P4ís joystick arm elbow gets in the way of P2ís button arm.

In the traditional cp set-up, youíd just have the occasional bumping elbows, which can be mitigated by slight standing offset from one another. But this design doesnít give you enough space to move forward or back for that offset standing position so itís more awkward to avoid interfering with other players arms.

Where's Scott and his diagram?
You say it, we play it.   :lol

Green = good.  Red = bad.

I have to disagree  :-\, my original idea was that, like in the picture, all in line (is easier install the hardware), but after measuring four persons, I found out that they does not fit, the persons on the sides (player 3 and 4) have to play with their arms and head in angle and is very annoying, so, naturally they will open to the side in angle, to avoid the guy next to then, and then they start moving the joystick in the wrong direction.
so the problems I found with straight layout:
1. space between players.
2. so the players move to the sides they will start moving the joystick in diagonals.

Not normally --- When playing off to the side like that it is instinctive to still move the controller up directly toward the screen so when you angle the joystick it will mess up the playing - IF you do not think so try it on an actual 4 player arcade machine at an arcade ( You'll notice they pretty much all do not angle the stick and players have no problems since your hands just think up is directly toward the screen not away from where you are standing.)

...and an industry standard back in the arcade days. But hey like I said, the novelty of a 4P cabinet is greater than it actually being properly functional. Iím sure all your hipster friends will be impressed.

I have no idea what is your crusade guys, is not the end of the world and I almost sure you will never be here to use it... I just place two ten year old kinds on player 3 and 4 and I set the angle based on their behavior, If, I have to do it, I will do it straight, is easier, looks correct, but my experience was different.. I don't say I right or wrong. I just did a test and based my layout on the results.... ::)
I normally don't play player 3 or 4, only when playing The Simpson 4 players (I use Lisa normally) and works fine... so is more a personal thing than a standard ...
