So... I picked up my first machine today! *new discovery!!
« on: January 31, 2004, 09:21:31 pm »
I went to my first auction and grabbed a Gauntlet Legends: Dark Legacy for 500$! not a bad price really considering the nice big screen, 4 player controls, and of course the game rocks and it only a couple years old. well the point of me getting a machine was for a MAME conversion... but now that im home and thinking straight again. I remember reading a thread just like last week about how a gauntlet legends is bad for MAME conversion cause the joys are 49 ways and the monitor is medium res =\

well this doesnt really bother me as i love gauntlet and having a dedicated machine is just cool as hell. but.. now i really dont wanna mess up the machine cause it will need a lot of work and it would really only be delvalueing it as im sure at a different auction it might even go for more.

sooo.. i pretty much accomplished nothing in the MAME sense, but now i have a cool machine to start my collection, but I still want a MAME machine, so what would the cheapest route be? at the auction most of the cabs i wouldve MAMEd, like neogeos and stuff went for 250+ which i thought was pretty high for crappy games. anyone know a better source in NJ for a empty or just cab/monitor kind of thing?

ok... rant over... post thoughts =P

Welcome to the club, brother, your obsession has just begun...

To date I have purchased 4 cabinets with the intention of MAME'ing, but I could only do one.  The others I bought for MAME projects I ended up restoring to original.  And people say MAME is bad for the collectors...  phooey, if it wasn't for MAME to rekindle my love for the classics, I would have let those old cabinets rot right where I found them...

Lol... I have thought about getting a Neo Geo to mame, but I decided that the problem would be that I wouldn't be able to tear apart a working Neo Geo to turn into mame for the same reason that you couldn't do that to Legends.  I would love to have an intact Neo Geo MVS with 4-6 slots, that way you can have 4-6 real arcade classics into one cab, and they are cart based so you can have many more and switch them out easily.  Not to mention that there have been some really sweet recent releases for the MVS including KOF 2003, SNK vs. Capcom: Chaos, Samurai Showdown 5, Metal Slug 5... ;)  I am sure I am not convincing you of anything if you think the Neo Geo sucks, but had to stand up for it.  I will probably have one of these sooner or later, it is the first arcade machine I would purchase for using as just the original and not turning into a mame machine for sure.

But remember....

the price for collecting is WAY more then maming a machine..

I would LOVE to be a collector... There are SO many games that having a dedicated machine would make me all giddy inside..

but because of space and cash... I am now happy if I can have an original controller to fix up.. and hack as well as I can.

Well I just bought three machines, with one being already delivered and the other two on the way (Crystal Castles here, Marble Madness and Joust 2 coming) and I must say, I maaaay have gotten a bit ripped off in price if you guys are buying machines as nice as GL:DL for $500!  Oh well, that's what happens when you ebay!  Anyway, since my purchases, I've seen a lot of things including cabinets for FREE or like $25.  Now of course, these are in crap shape, but they are perfect for the sand-down/paint and MAMEing.  I mean, these things are usually in such shape that restoring them would be to difficult so you'd feel less guilty about hacking them.  Now there is absouluty NO way I'd MAME a restoreable game, even if it was a sucky one one b/c they aren't being built anymore, but you can buy a SlickStik cabinet and build a MAME machine anytime.  Of course the cost is very high, but the option is always there, not so with buying a new Crystal Castles or something....  Just my $.02, hope you find a great deal!

Dang 500 bucks seems like alot of money!  I was try to get a mortal kombat 3 in really nice condition that had been converted to a cool newer Psycho shmup but still had the the MK3 boards inside so really it had 2 games in it but he ended up wanting 300 for it and I wouldnt go above 230 so I passed it up.  It was pretty hard to pass up becuase I was pretty sure I was going to get it for an entire week but oh well thats how it goes.

Really I think you just need to have patience for that mameable cab to come along some old beat up NBA jam or football type game that is just broken that way you just dont feel bad about gutting it.  Also price is pretty big issue if I'm going to get a beat up old mame cab I plan to get it for sub 100 bucks and I know it may take me a while to find that but it will be worth it when I do.

yeah well pretty much i want a cab with a monitor and working controls since that would be the easiest wiring wise. then i could just use a Jpac/arcadeVGA combo and no problems there. but it would have to be some type of fighting game cabinet with the capcom 6 button layout, since in MAME i plan on playing all the SNK and capcom fighters.

if i could find say a street fighter II machine with a working monitor it would be ideal. of course 200$ would be tops what im willing to pay for that.. and suprisingly ive seen auction prices for them over 200 occasionally. well theres another auction in cherry hill, NJ a month from now, so ill have some money again and its a different company, so maybe i can find something for MAME

I went to that same auction too (less than 4 miles from my house) and bought my first cab with intentions of making it a MAME machine.

Given the selection of units at the auction, I was prepared to spend about $200.  Here's the ones I was looking at (in order of preference):

Soul Edge
GigaWing
Bust a Move (Neo Geo with the oversize CP)
Sunset Riders (4 player)
Cowboys of Moo Mesa (4 player)
Simpsons (4 player)
Open Ice (4 player)

All cabs had oversized control panels approx 37" wide.  All had 25" monitors.

The Soul edge machine used to be a NBA Tournament (4 player) cab.  It was pretty beat up.  Front corners broken, cuts in the case for security bars across the coin door.  It needed a ton of work.  I figured it would go really cheap.  When it came time to auction it, the owner had them start the bidding at $200.  The owner ended up buying it back at around $300, I think.  The same thing happened with the Bust-a-move (Neo Geo) that he brought.  The Neo Geo control panel was really messed up.  Looked like water damage.  The owner ended up putting both units back in the auction later.  I don't remember what they ended up selling for.

Well, after the run up on those two beat up units, I really didn't expect to have a chance with the GigaWing machine.  It was in really nice condition.  a little scuffed on the sides but nothing a coat of paint wouldn't fix.  When it came up for auction, the bidding topped out at $210.  Suprised at the low price, I raised my card and got it for $220.  If you figure in the $10 I paid for the "bidding card", the 10% "buyers premium", and 6% NJ sales tax, my total cost was $266.52.  It was a little more than I wanted to spend but given the wonderful condition of the machine, I am completely thrilled.

I was told that Sunset Riders and Cowboys of Moo Mesa ended up going for more than what I paid for my cab as well.  And they were pretty beat up as well.  It goed to show you, you never know what people are going to bid up.

I got GigaWing home, cleaned it up, and checked it out more thoroughly and here's the list of what I've found wrong with it:

bent "feet" (bought replacements for $4 at the show)
marquee light not working (replaced bulb but still dead)
coin door lock missing
rear door lock broken
two coin mechs missing
one coin mech "eject" doesn't work
two burned out coin door lights
power cord missing ground prong
two missing "cartridge clips" on the Capcom System II board

I also think that the power supply might be a little off as there seems to be some electrical noise of some kind on the monitor.  It's mostly only visible when the screen is showing very light colors.  I'll have to research and investigate further.

The monitor itself is bright, sharp, and doesn't appear to have any burn in.

From the dates on the monitor and coin door, It appears the cab was made in 1992.  The Capcom system 2 and Gigawing cartridge are dated 1999.

The cabinet is suprisingly narrow.  It's exactly 24" wide inside and measures approx 26" outside.  Many other cabs I measured at the show were 27"-29" wide.

Now the design work on my MAME control panel begins!

A few notes.

#1. New Jersey is the arcade cabinet capital of the world, they have more cabinets there than anywhere else. They also have more auctions there than anywhere else.

#2. Finding a cabinet is butt easy if you bother looking and don't have your heart set on a 27" monitor and 4-player control panel.

#3. You don't need a 4-player "deluxe" cabinet now anyway, you already have one, and believe me you aren't gonna need another one.

#4. You can build 2 or 3 19" cabinets for the price of one 27" one. And believe me, you would have more fun with more cabinets than with one larger one.

#5. Try calling Todd from TNT Amusements, he is close to New Jersey and sets out free cabinets in the back of his warehouse all the time.

nice i was looking at that giga wing too krick. was it me or was that auction way overpriced?? i made sure i playtested every machine i was interested in and that soul edge had a bad 2nd joy, and 1 button didnt work, plus it was pretty beat. it somehow went for 300. the neo geos were way overpriced they were both over 250+ hammer price. MK3 went for a couple hundred... it just seemed way overpriced from the prices im used to seeing on basement arcades auction price coverage.

paige, yeah i dont want another 4 player. i would settle for a 19inch setup but it would be nice to have another 25in.  Is my limit of like 200$ for a cab with capcom 6 button layout and a working monitor realistic? according to other auction price listings SF2s have went for as low as 125, i just cant seem to find them =\

oh and another thing, i went to my local arcade today to play some DDR and beatmania, and they had 2 Ms Pacs in very good condition right next to each other! I couldnt find the owner but I want to find out if he wants to sell one =)  they were set for 50c though! kinda ---smurfy---.... but i set the high score on both of them 8)

Operators who still run Ms. Pacs rarely want to sell them. He has probably had a lot of requests, but those things paid for themselves 22 years ago, and probably make twice their current market value for him each year.

$200 is more than enough for a nice 19" cabinet. Don't worry so much about the number of buttons, just look for one with a generic overlay so you can add more buttons later. Really $100 should buy a cab with a good monitor. Look for a generic looking cabinet that is displaying garbage (but good looking garbage) as a generic looking cab with a boardset problem isn't gonna sell for much.

Streetfighter 2 prices has been rising in recent years due to the fact that the people who played them are getting old enough to buy them, and the fact that they all have suicide batteries, and thus are dying left and right.

last one... possibly the worst angle you could look at the machine from due to scratches and stuff... some new T-molding would make the machine look a lot better

Way too cool to MAME! You'll be happier keeping that one as-is. I had to shop around for exactly what I was looking for, but I finally did find one. A semi gutted 80's cab that had undergone a very sloppy conversion at some point. Also the original game (Blueprint) is hardly a classic, so doing a MAME conversion is 100% guilt free.

I kind of agree. I think you should gut it, sell the boards and polish it up real pretty-like. The sale of the boards should offset the costs you will have when MAMEing the cab.

It is not a dedicated Gauntlet Legends, it is a conversion of a TMNT or Simpsons, so MAME with impunity.

hmm... well would that mean the joys might be 8 ways? i sometimes hear the little click clicks when i move them around. do 49s do that? cause one of the main reasons i was thinking about keeping this was because i would have to change virtually everything and i didnt pay 500 for a wood cab if i have to switch monitor/controls and everything.

so hypotheticly if i did MAME it, should i take off that CP and make a new one? cause i would want the capcom 6 button layout for players 1 and 2 and i dunno if theres room, plus i would have to drill holes where theres already partial holes from other stuff... i dunno.

also i would need to find another monitor to swap in since thats medium res, well it *should* be medium res. would gauntlet run on a standard if they converted this from something with a standard monitor?

oh and a noob question... how would i get the CP off to look at the underneath so i can check the joys and take pics

If you enjoy the game.  I would keep it as is.  Of course, do not keep spending money till the end.

Have a set, no more than 4 plays per time playing or something.

yeah i think its a great game and out of any normal upright game it would probably keep me occupied longer then anything else. although inevitably it will get boring after time. I usually limit myself to like 4 credits or 1 full area , whatever comes last.

if i did MAME it i would like it to be switchable back to the gauntlet board. and the player 3-4 setups could stay how they are maybe ill add 1 button so they have 4 each.

If you reach up through the coin door, under the control panel, there should be latches at each end.  Unhook the latches, and the top swings up, hinged from the front like a corvette hood.  Once you have the top open, you should see 3 or 4 bolts that hold the control panel box to the rest of the cabinet.  Disconnect the wiring, remove the bolts, and the CP lifts right off.

Dude I'm so jealous I love giga wing its one of my favs and for 220 that really cool I would kill for a deal like that!

well i spent a lot of sunday and today from like 5-9 playing my new machine... and then i finally decided to do more then open the door, peek in, and then say woot it works and start playing again =P    i unlatched the CP and took off the back and had a good look around with a flashlight and referencing the dark legacy conversion manual that came with the machine.  My suspicion was right, I have 8 way joys in my gauntlet legends cab! at times i felt like i couldnt aim my lvl 3 turbo attack right and thats why. so i was thinking, Ill get 2 49ways from happs or whatever, install them in the 2 main spots, and then use those 2 8ways for the 2 player CP im building for my MAME cab. is it hard to put in 49ways? since im converting from a 8 way which isnt even supposed to be in that cab... who knows if its wired right.

also there is only 1 speaker in my cab and i cant find the other wires that the 2nd one would connect to, at the moment since i had one laying around i spliced a 12 inch subwoofer (yeah i have these laying around... car audio freak) into the line going to the 6x9 on top of the cab. it made it a little louder its kinda ---smurfy--- sounding though since its still mono. i followed the wires from the jamma connector to the speaker on top and its just 2 wires, there should be 2 more for another speaker right? i couldnt figure out why it wasnt saying "green warrior needs food", its cause it was set on stereo mode and it uses the right speaker for that... which doesnt exsist. so i have it set on mono for now.

soo, what do you guys think i should do, about the joys and the speakers?

some pics to follow...

I believe you need a daughterboard for the 49 way sticks, so it may set you back some $$$.

I just got this game awhile back and everything works and there is no daughter board for the joysticks, but there are connectors at the end to connect them which you may need.  My digital camera is broke but hope to get it fixed tomorrow and I can take some pics to show you.  Let me know if you want them and I'll make sure I get the camera done tomorrow.

I still stand by my original opinion of not using that cabinet for Mame. It is still an in-demand working game in great condition. You would still be killing a "Dark Legacy" by parting it and Maming it because that sideart isn't gonna come off, and that marquee has been cut to fit the cab, and the overlay has too, etc.
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

I just had a better look and I'll try to explain best I can how mine is wired.  As you see in pic below, joys 1&2 are in the jamma connector, 3&4 are in the connectors above that, and I also have 2 more connectors if you are wirng other stuff to the left of the board that go to the coin doors.  About 2 feet before the wiring meets the joysticks, my harness splits in 4 and has 4 connectors there that branch off to each joystick and end in a connector.  I think you will need the connector for sure to hook up the 49 ways.  If yours is split like mine, you can probably just get the extension piece to wire up the new joysticks.  I'm looking to do the opposite and hook up 8 ways.  Let me know if I can do anything else.

yeah i decided im going to keep it whole, im actually trying to restore it to original setup cause mine came with 8ways and i want to convert it to 49ways for the authentic feel. Im going to get Mark's (from Basement Arcade) robocop with nothing in it, and do a full conversion on that.

crapjoint if you could get some pics of your joystick wiring that would be great. any idea where i would find those connectors that are in your wiring or would they come with the 49s if i order them from happs

any input on the speakers? im kind of stumped i dont see any wires that look like they should be attached to a speaker but arent. i think they have the pinout for the jamma connector in the manual maybe ill end up having to run my own wires from the connector to another speaker?

Good news, and a wise decision as far as I'm concerned. You shouldn't have any problem picking up a dead conversion for a MAME project. I bought one with a monitor and a coin door for $50 a couple weeks back.

Regarding your speakers, does this cab have two speakers in it or just one? If just one, does it have a place for a second? I'm just wondering if it was originally set up for mono sound. I really don't know anything at all about the newer cabs though.

yeah , probably picking it up this weekend. im getting just the cabinet no monitor or boards, and im gonna use a PC monitor and MAME it.

about the speakers, it looks like this was converted from a single speaker cabinet, the grill above the screen is in the middle and theres really only room for 1 speaker on the grill. i dont see any other wires that look like they should go to a speaker coming out of my jamma connector. I will take a closer look today and maybe get some pictures when i go home.

I went to that auction in Cherry Hill, NJ right before Christmas...picked up a U.N. Squadron game that works great and a Neo Geo that has no cartridge and has a broken monitor neck.  The Neo Geo cab only cost $30 and is gonna make an awesome MAME cabinet I think.  I plan on just sticking a computer monitor in mine.
