Help choosing cabinet
« on: October 18, 2016, 11:17:08 am »
Hey guys, now that my first cabinet is in the final stages, I am setting my sights on creating one from scratch.

I am looking for Technos cabinet plans or dimensions in the style of WWF Superstars (almost flat monitor)

Can anyone help? Can't seem to find much online.

Thanks

Maybe this:

Stargate Arcade Cabinet

I don't think that has the dimensions, I think this is for 3D modeling.

Assuming these sketchup plans are accurate, they will totally give you the dimensions you need. Just use the tape measure tool to measure any length you want on the model. In the picture below, it looks like the height of the cab is 5ft 10in  (but you can change sketup's dimensions to whatever you want)

Another Sketchup tip: If you change the model to 2D mode by:

1. Camera > Standard view > front
2. Camera > Parallel projection

This will put the camera view square on the side of the cab. You can then export the drawing to scale. Then print that at office depot or fedex kinkos...boom you have your sides to trace for a cut.

Gotcha!

Thanks Vwall. I am at work, so can't open up the Sketch-Up file. I'll check it out when I get home.

Thanks again.

LyonsArcade on KLOV identified it as a Venture cabinet, and it looks like I can grab at least the side panel PDF on Classic Arcade Cabinets, but there is a big disclaimer about not trusting the specs. There is no dimensions on it, but the shape looks legit.  :dunno

I always took Brian's disclaimers more for the CNC files. I expect the trace of the side panel is accurate.  Just my 2 cents.....

Well, onto a new quandary. One of the guys on Klov mentioned that the build I was looking at was actually a conversion, so now I don't know if I should go with the original Superstars style cab, or stick with the Venture one.....decisions, decisions. I still like the Venture cab style, and since it's going to be a multi-wrestling cabinet, I guess it doesn't matter, but they made me stop and think.... :dizzy:

The disclaimers I put on any cabinet that have not been verified. In many of the cases, the plans are something that I have bought from another CNCer and have a lot of faith in.... but I have not been able to spot check the drawings for accuracy.  A description of the "accuracy rating" can be found here http://www.classicarcadecabinets.com/faq.html

All of the DXF files posted on the website have the measurement embedded. You will need to open the files in a CAD viewer to access the dimensions (lots of free options out there). I will get a howto posted in the next week or two.

For me, the accuracy is the most important thing. If I have a cabinet that is traced and is off by a 1/4" or more, the accuracy score drops (or more likely, I correct the plans). The proof is in cutting and assembly of a cabinet. While many of the plans may be dead on accurate, I will not give a score higher then the 80's unless a confirmed cabinet has been cut. It is easy to make a mistake when drawing out the cabinet and doing some mental math. An 85% score may result in a 100% accurate cabinet, but until confirmation of being cut and assembled, I won't bump the score.

If anyone uses the plans, please LMK how they turn out. This is a community project.... so without the feedback, things will not improve.

Thank you
Brian

Thanks for clarifying Brian, I was planning on using the PDF file as I am not having my cabinet CNC'd, and do not use CAD. I was stating that there were no dimensions on the PDF version. I guess there won't need to be as once I print them out I will have them. I did find the dimensions on another site which will help as well. I'll let you know what happens.

I know it's a matter of personal preference, but looking for opinions on which cabinet feels more "80s"

I love the Venture conversion, but the Technos is obviously the original cabinet. I set out to replicate the Superstars (in cabinet alone), until I saw the Venture conversion on arcade-museum making me think THAT was the original cabinet and the Technos was a "second version" or something.

So now I am torn between the two. I was thinking of making the Technos cabinet and setting the monitor in that flatter position, kind of merging both, but not sure how that would look.

Two in question:

Just thinking out loud here, and hoping some of you guys can chime in.

Joust and Defender cabinets are far better for 2 player play than the style that lays the monitor way back.

Agreed. Joust makes a great 2P cab. Having the screen more upright also makes it more visible for attract mode.

While I prefer Joust's lines, Defender is much easier to build for someone who isn't a carpenter.

You guys are killing me....lol.

If I am going to do a Joust or Defender cab, I mine as well just do the Technos cab as they are pretty similar. I assume I can get more detailed plans for a Williams cabinet much easier though.

Which cabinet do you think is a "Technos" cabinet? The thing you have pictured is a conversion of an older cabinet. Technos was more of a software house and not a full arcade company, I am pretty sure all their dedicated games were just the kit installed in a Dynamo cabinet.

Looks close to the old Dynamo HS-1 style..... Maybe a little different around the control panel.
