Attempting to create some 3d Printable star wars yoke handles

I have two yoke handle grips that I would like to replicate so that I can get them 3d printed.  One for spy hunter and one for road blasters/star wars etc.


I tried my hand tracing the spy hunter one into sketchup and although it was coming along--I am a gross newbie (downloaded the program wednesday lol).

^This --- You never know when someone might be a bit bored and decide to give it a try and if the files are available they can do so without committing to anything beforehand - rather than having to contact you and arrange to get the files which might not be received until the free time has past.

As an aside--Maybe scale them a bit bigger--they are a shade less than 5" tall and it seems like a slightly larger handle would fit our adult hands more comfortably--just a thought...

idk how well it will work as I have never used it but since you have the grips on hand maybe try 123D Catch to create your models..

I have long wondered why there aren't good 3d print models of star wars yoke parts.  I will watch with avid interest your progress so please post any results.

The renderings attached to that post show the level of detail that I generated. Enough to make my mount, but not enough to reproduce handles.

If this makes for a good starting point for somebody to make detailed models, here are my old SolidWorks files. I no longer have access to SolidWorks, so I can't verify the parts. Let me know if something's missing. Unzip both files into the same folder. Yoke.SLDASM is the top assembly.

Thanks Jason!  I've sent them along to my brother who crafted up this--great starting point!  The plan will to make two halves of the yoke so switches can be mounted.  I plan on using regular easy to find cherry switches.  The shaft diameter will be 5/8" which is also the outside diameter of a piece of standard 1/2" copper pipe..This might change after a trip to home depot.

Does anybody know which plastic the old handles were made of? I think most 3D printers use ABS now.

They were cast aluminum so yeah there'll be some details lost to anot her Era.   I've tried his prototype handles and other than being very light they have the right feel.

I had some free time yesterday afternoon so I started the yoke body.  I used my plans from a decade ago...http://arcadecontrols.com/hosted/yoke/

And modified them for 1/2" copper tubing--the X-axis shaft is 3/8" x3" black steel gas pipe threaded into the wood body--much beefier than the lamp tubes I used on the previous incarnation.  I also used plastic bushings on the shaft for a smoother quieter movement--no more squeeky wood on metal.   Next step is finding some good return to center springs-I think a microsoft steering wheel may make a donation in that regard.

first prototype--red triggers were the discretion of the printer--I like the contrast!  Its a two part clamshell type assembly with the 5/8" hole for mounting to the 1/2" copper pipe.

This took 12 hours to print

fully operational base--my return to center rate is off so I think I need beefier springs.

That's not too shabby!  Just needs a good sanding and an acetone bath and it'll be funky fresh!

This is definitely something I'm interested in, since my old SW cabinet without a yoke could need some love and be played properly again
