High Score Competition #199: Targ
« on: August 29, 2016, 09:55:18 am »
High Score Competition Rules and Scoreboard

----------------------
Game Name : Targ
ROM Name  = targ
----------------------

Settings:
   default : Lives -3, that's it.

Controls:
    4 way joystick, 'shoot' button

Taken from the '23 Most Brutally Tough 80’s Arcade Games' list, this is ranked #8.

From KLOV : Your ship the "Wummel" travels through a 9 x 9 grid of yellow squares (the "Crystal City") avoiding and shooting the ten red Targ ramships. Each Targ shot is worth ten points, this climbs to 20 on the second level, 30 on the third, and so on. At random a siren will sound, and the Spectar released into the Crystal City, shooting it scores 100-500 points. Clearing all Targs from a level scores 1000 bonus on the first level, 2000 on the second, 3000 on the third, etc. With each level, the Targs get faster and smarter.

Note : Beating 10,000 points gives you an extra life. I misinterpreted this. Beating 10,000 points gives you an extra credit, which is pretty useless.

2nd note : That is damn hard to do. This is still valid.

Final scores.

Heh. I don't like the game much, too, but I do like the challenge. I thought I was doing pretty well until I saw the high score on MARP. 131k plus change. How the heck did he do that ? Must get closer to that score.

17,100.

I watched a video review of this, every time the bonus ship appeared, the guy went "Shut up! Shut up! Shut UP!"  ;D I'm playing without sound. Works well.

I have bought a wireless mini keyboard for that. It's about the size of an Xbox 360 controller, cost me 18 or 19 Euros (shipping included) and has a mute button. It also has vol+ and vol- buttons, but they don't work that well.

Wish i can join.

Tried a few more times, just couldn't beat that score.

Pity there isn't a Space Chaser contest somewhere, I'd win for sure.   ;D

If you do, make sure to get one with an on/off switch, saves tons of battery life.

So we have to make sure not to choose that, then :D
For the record, last year we did a similar game, Fast Lane, some people managed to make quite good scores. It got really boring, though.

I am just finishing up a cab of my own. It is playable it just needs some cosmetic touches. Whoever picks the next game, could you please make it a vertical 4 way or a vertical trackball? I would like to jump in the pool. I also own a Defender dedicated and a STUN runner dedicated.
Thanks.

For some reason the Quote button isn't working for me.

My usual score is around 32,000 but I've managed 50,000 on the odd occasion. I notice the official high score is only 9450 or something, which is pretty awful.

EDIT: Here's one I did just now. It shows the high score screen which I assume most ppl would never have seen.

44,190

You are right. You would definitely win that one. I barely managed to get to level three after playing for half an hour or so. This obviously is a game where you have to learn the enemy patterns, I doubt that I would have the patience to do that. Not for a game that I dislike, anyway.

Edit : The high score seems to depend on which set of the game you play. I have looked up the MARP scores, on set 1 (schaser) it's 539,040, on set 2 (schasera) it's 372,520. On set 3 (schaserb) it's 67,360, done by the same guy who did the set 1 score.

I hate this game!

To make matters worse I fluked a 4k score once - hit print screen only to realise only f12 works in MAME.

Here's my best terrible score since:

@Mike A -- It's not a vertical game but should work on your new arcade since it is 4 way and 1 button (screen will just be a bit smaller if displayed vertical but should be playable for you)
