Bartop Design Ideas
« on: April 29, 2016, 06:49:48 pm »
Well, I am just now getting ready to build a bartop and basically decided on a similar design to jahilton2002 space invader silhouette (not the space invader part). And what sparked this thought was that I have read some opinions that people are tired of the weecade silhouette and got me thinking about other designs. So I did a quick modification of some silhouette pics I had found on KLOV and thought I would share them. Please note that I did not adjust one separately, but by row. So there may be some need to adjust for some of them.

Hopefully they will spark some creative juices.

AtariCabs-bartop

BallyMidwayCabs-bartop

SternCabs-bartop

WilliamsCabs-bartop

TaitoCabinets-bartop

To me, these look a lot like the weecade silhouette.

Funny!!

And I should add that in no way is jahilton2002 space invader cabinet a weecade design by any stretch of the imagination (in my post it had that possible implication)

Yeah - perfect functionality wise for a bartop.

Is PBJ sleeping? How has he not commented in this thread yet?
If you can read this, it means Photobucket's money grab ruined my signature photos.

I hope this wasn't a bad thread to start?

Well, until I made the sheets, I never saw much else besides weecades being made. Of course there are a few outstanding bartop designs that are not weecades.

I am now trying to decide on which to go with? I have a cardboard mockup of  jahilton2002's, debating if I will stick with it or go for broke and make a new design from one of these?

Some of those translate well,  others don't,  but it's good to see these to simulate creativity.

The Atari profiles work really well - especially the system 1/2 ones.

I'm not ratting on the wee-Cade. It does the job. It's just with so many designs available it would be cool to see some more variation as with lcds and piis/mini itx boards any of those designs will work.

I guess it's a personal thing but if i was going to build a bartop I'd really want it to look more like one of those the op posted. Hopefully it will inspire a new wave of funky cabs  ;D

I like the tempest.

same.
Heck I like the full sized tempest design.
More than the game itself.
Enough that I really want to build one and I don't know why.

It's not really that original and certainly not custom but I recently picked up this official Namco bar top Pac Man 25th Anniversary machine specifically because it uses that classic cabinet shape in its design. I love it. Now I'm trying to figure out what kind of multigame board I should put in it, but I suppose that's a topic for another thread. ;-)

I'd like one just because it is an officially released bartop.

Regardless of custom or not, sounds like you are very happy with it. I think that matters the most. And it sounds like you want to custom it up a bit anyways! Enjoy!

I built a Stargate thats something like your Williams example years ago. At the time, I built it "fat" to use a 19" CRT.

Thanks Lew, and right back at ya. Love that your Tempest perfectly captures the essence of the full sized game. I still have the Stargate, and built a base for it when I finally got the gameroom done. It doesn't get much play now that I found original machines.
