Supermodel new renderer (SVN 303) - big improvements!
« on: March 24, 2016, 08:43:07 pm »
A new guy has rewritten the renderer in Supermodel with some pretty impressive results.

http://www.supermodel3.com/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1139

Someone's uploaded a video of Sega Rally 2 running and it looks significantly improved (they've also handily provided some links to some pre-compiled builds). Dirt Devils also appears hugely improved and I believe Le Mans 24 also has benefited from this. Awesome.

Great news. Got Sega Rally 2 very playable on my cab, but had to turn som graphic effects off to not get bugs in the graphics.

I am so glad someone is finally working on Supermodel again, even if just one part of it.
It sounds like Ian's work is getting Bart interested in Supermodel again.

I can't wait to see an improved Dirt Devils.  ;D

Dirt Devils - From the same uploader.

Like you say BM, it's great to see that Bart seems to have got his emulator mojo back as well as a result of the new work. Now if only Nik would resurface and finish off the multiplayer link...

Nice....  I couldn't find the links though.

They're in the description of the Sega Rally 2 video, mate - Links for a pre-compiled 64 bit and 32 bit build.

Well it's a series of pop-ups and viruses that might randomly spit out the file, but sure.  Seriously why don't people just use mediafire?

The renderer seems much improved though.... I think the performance is even better.

I was playing around with it a bit.... star wars trilogy is still a little goofy unfortunately.  I really want to put that on my rig.

Shame the sound is borked though, I can't play Sega Rally 2 without hearing badly distorted in-game music, just glad I can disable it using the -no-dsb command line switch to disable the sound board.

SVN 308 just came out but the audio problems still haven't been fixed, just a few fixes mostly for Harley-Davidson and L.A. Riders.

You aint missing much terminator2k2, I prefer to have working sound than just an update to the gfx engine.

The new code is far from being optimized so will hit your CPU hard until it is, hence the slowdown you're suffering.

Best sticking with SVN 277 imho, simply because everything works!

Is it less goofy that it was?  Are the boss fights still borked with the life meters and arrows in black and the light saber all dull looking?  I really would like to see that title made whole.

The graphics seemed to be *slightly* better, but yeah... same issues as before.  Remember, this is a renderer upgrade so emulation issues won't be fixed.

We like everyone is saying.... they are working on the emulator again, and that means there's hope that it'll get fixed eventually.

Bart's after a few people to do a bit of testing on some of the new SVN revisions to try and iron out some of the audio bugs if anyone here fancies helping out. The links to the builds are in the thread below over at the Supermodel forum:

Doesn't matter.  At least they are taking the steps to improve it.  It's not like the games we play are the newest....

there are 32bit versions , don't know if they work on xp though

the problem with link which pooterman linked to is an older update and runs like crap on my cab....the later versions 312 with audio problems are great....

it supposed to be a compiler error which causes the audio problems, but I tried most of yesterday to compile svn312 but it just wouldn't compile...so I gave up...

This is the second most recent SVN. Sega Rally 2 looks amazing now.

And here's Dirt Devils looking 95% perfect

Lookin good.  There are other improvements on the more playable games as well.  For example the scoreboard in Daytona 2 is no longer interlaced, games that had solid reflections over the windows are now translucent like they are supposed to be ect...

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  :dizzy: :dizzy: :dizzy:

Thanks for the vids MT! Looks wonderful mate!

What about performance? Do the games still run full speed on a decent to beefy PC or are they a bit more demanding now? I thought I read someone say he took a framerate hit using these builds with the new renderer(?)

I read that as well, but I've not noticed any issues myself so far on my i5. I haven't tried Scud Race or Daytona yet, but as you can see from the above videos both Sega Rally 2 and Dirt Devils run full-speed with FRAPS capture.

Edit: I've just read over at the Supermodel forum that in SVN 333 the missing textures on the AI cars in Daytona 2 are now working and the lightsabers are the right colour in Star Wars  :notworthy:

They're up to revision 335 now.

I'm running it on a much lesser pc and if anything performance has increased.  I think some people just had issues running the games to begin with, for whatever reason.

I had problems with 1 of the releases, but it turned out to be a debug version of supermodel. All releases aftet that i compiled my self and have had no problems at all. I think the svn 303 with the audio fixed is also a debug version as it kills my frame rate. I find it strange that all debug releases seem to have audio working fine as the release versions have problems with the audio, mainly on sega rally 2

So I tried 335 and aside from the pre-existing emulation issues and some translucency and blending effects missing, star wars trilogy is now perfectly playable!

The light sabers are there.  The speeder bike stage now has all the targeting graphics and shows the gun fire.  The only issues I see are minor things, like the exhaust on the ships is a bit too solid and the trees on Endor still have white lines around their leaves.  So yeah aside from the bug about starting the game with a coin inserted everything looks pretty much as it should.

If anyone is having issues with dodgy audio in the recent 64 bit builds it might be worth checking out this new build that somebody compiled using a different program to Visual Studio. It's sorted the all the random pops and crackles I was getting in Sega Rally 2.

Mingw is what we used to use for mame.  It's a better compiler imho.

For me Daytona 2 still isn't quite right.  The cars have their textures, but it looks like the stencil of the number stickers are being applied instead of the number textures themselves, so it's a black box with a number cut out.

the chequered flag background has also gone missing on the track/car and gears select screen.

 :lol

This is a good sign.  Bart had commented that before the next official release he was going to revamp the website and help page (because nobody reads the included instructions).
He also said he wanted to do official releases more often.
Of course, once a year would be more often.   ;D

Let me tell you something.  I've been in that spot and getting help is a huge motivator.  It's hard to keep doing something by yourself even if it's fun to you.  I figure the render work has given him a nice kick in the pants to implement the mame progress that has been made for model 3 and clean some other stuff up.

I'm super excited.  :)
