Help needed with windows arcade machine
« on: March 09, 2016, 05:20:30 pm »
Hi folks, I am working on a project which requires me to build an arcade machine to run the game Terrordrome. It is a DOS game (.exe) but the problem is, is that it only works in fullscreen mode correctly on windows xp/Vista/7. I was wondering if any of you had any input into what kind of hardware I could use to run it. I need it to be able to boot on receiving power from the wall socket and it needs to have at least one USB port to be able to plug a 2 player arcade control via USB interface. I realise I could do this with a small PC build, perhaps mini ITX, but I would like something smaller and a bit cheaper than a full pc build
The list of hardware which I have already looked into:
  • Raspberry Pi (Wrong architecture to run windows)
  • Intel Compute Stick(Cant boot on power and no support for anything below Windows 8 )
  • MinnowBoard(No support for anything below Windows 8 )
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Thanks

  • Yeah, owning a MAME cab only leads to owning real ones. MAME just isn't good enough. It's a gateway drug.

Pick up a cheap PC from here, they come with Win 7:

It doesn't take much power to run Terrordrome well. (And post pics when you're done if you're going to have matching art, because that game is awesome!)

Pick up any 1st gen 64-bit based PC on eBay. Can be had for $20. In the BIOS set it it to power on on AC recovery. You can plug both the cab and PC into a powerstrip and both will power on once you flick the switch. Or you can hack the ATX Power cable and plug that into the fins on the power distribution block if you want it to be cleaner. Check my recent post if you want to see how I did that.

You should get a Radeon HD4350 based card so it will output 15khz which works with an arcade monitor. Assuming you have a CRT monitor. Then do a little reading on "CRT_Emu Drivers". You'll be up and running in no time.
When you find great deals on Craigslist for CRT based cabs, exuberance :laugh2: can be a bad thing!

Current Status of Cabs:  2-of-11 (and counting) working as desired  :applaud: :applaud:/:banghead: :banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead:

Have you tried running the game in DOSBox on the Pi?

It's definitely a Windows game and will need to run under Windows.
