I need to know if I need to buy a new monitor
« on: March 08, 2016, 11:22:45 am »
Hey there this is my first time posting to this board, and I need some help to figure out a problem with Popeye cabinet that I bought recently. Well here goes I noticed that the top screen where the score is a little bit scrambled. not game breaking but a little annoying and I was wondering if anyone know if there is a fix or do I need to looking for a new monitor. Below is screenshot of said problem, also monitor is a Sanyo EZ.

no picture...

also... no monitors are left... unless you change it to an LCD and depending on the game resolution and monitor, they may not work with each other well without some kind of additional board.

the sanyo EZ series is almost 30 years old now. it's going to need it's capacitors changed for new ones if it hasn't been done already. kits are available online for a few bucks each.

The video above does not work for me.

You should really make an attempt to fixing that CRT before considering an LCD. That Popeye cab was designed to have a CRT in it and you owe it to that machine to at least give the CRT a cap kit.

I never capped a monitor before and the sanyo 20EZ was the first one I did. It went very well. Got my $9 kit from Ian Kellog

If you have never done a kit before, I'd recommend getting them from him because he includes all the instructions and each cap is labeled.

Here is a doing a cap kit. It was very helpful to me.

EDIT: the $9 kit above is the most basic. Depending on the issue your monitor is having, you might need additional parts.

If you can read this, it means Photobucket's money grab ruined my signature photos.

if you need somewhere to upload pics for the time being it's just as easy to post a link. it's just cause you have a new account. get about 5 or 10 posts under your belt and you'll be good.

imgur is a good site to use to link pictures as well.

that pic is potato as potato.  :-\ hard to tell... best i can tell is the sync on the beginning of scan on flyback is slightly off for a few raster scans.

usually this is a horizontal/vertical retrace feedback issue, a dead cap issue, or a dirty/weak sync issue. 1 and 2 are usually related as often the feedback flows through a cap. #3 is as easy as wiggling a connector to see if it gets better.

like i mentioned, if the caps are original, they really should be changed... capacitor lifetime is measured to be about 3 to 5 thousand HOURS of runtime before they drift out of specification.

I am not one to confuse the OP, But it should be pointed out not all caps are born of quality, Ever wonder why you see new Tvs in the dumpster? normally kits like those posted here are convenient, and work, But are not about being all they could be (**not shaming any venders here either) Personally I am skeptical, and as such buy my caps discretely one at a time, favoring high temp R/con in my builds. It takes more time and cost a few dollars more But Jennifer sleeps so much better @ night.

Those TVs were part of the Capacitor plague that ended in 2007:

It's safe to buy inexpensive electrolytics again.

I buy caps in bulk (mainly because i use TONS of them.) I'll get a 50 pack and use them up in a few months. sometimes I'll get a rash of motherboards and I'll go through a couple hundred 10v 1000uF caps in a few months.

I have monitors that i've recapped in the last year, that have bulged tops that i have to do again.

they just don't make them like they used to. Stuff runs much hotter than they used to. dirty power supplies make caps work much harder than the used to.
