Purity issues when rotating a WG D9500
« on: March 28, 2010, 12:00:49 pm »
Hi everyone,

Just looking for some ideas on how to possibly fix a purity issue w/ this particular monitor (which other than this issue has been working great!).

I have a rotating monitor setup and in the horizontal position, I see no issues using the Nokia test pattern generator (R/G/B screens).  However, when I put it in the vertical position in the upper right the color is off in a splotchy area.  I let the machine sit for about a day with the monitor off in the vertical position to be sure it was degaussed.  I also removed the large speaker right above the monitor which had a HUGE magnet in it.  Had zero effect on the issue.

An interesting thing I noticed is that when I'm degaussing as it is doing its thing it looks perfect and then when it "settles" the discoloring kinda shows up.

Any suggestions?

monitors are degaussed for a particular position...upright, turning it on it's side is messing that up. Your going to have to buy/borrow/make a degaussing tool to get rid of it.

The monitor has a built in degauss function which clears up the changes from rotating but there is still a splotchy area (in the same spot).  Unless I'm misunderstanding your suggestion.

Rotating the monitor grossly changes the established field in the screen, to the point where the auto degauss can't (or may) fix it. You might have to do it manually if the auto degauss (ment for minor magnetic changes) doesn't do it.

Ah I see, makes sense.

Would you expect this to persist if the monitor was left off for a day or two?  I left it off (in the vertical position) for quite a while and turned it on today and it still has the discoloring in the exact same spot.

what you will have to do is turn on the unit on..leave it for about 5 minutes then bring up the on screen display menu.

select the degauss option.

wait about 15 minutes

bring up the OSD menu again and select degauss.

wait another 15 minutes.

repeat until color returns to normal.

the reason you have to wait 15 is because the circuit that does the degauss can get very hot and burn up if done too often too quickly. it's best to wait between degausses to allow it to cool.

Sorry for the necro, but this has been bugging me again, and the issue has persisted over a move to a new house and moving to different rooms.

Some things I have tried:

- Degaussing in the vertical position (in fact, it stays in the vertical for days and I turn on and see see the impurity)
- Shielding the monitor from speakers, etc

I'm at a loss for what to try next, it looks awful.

Any ideas on what could be causing it?

unplug the degauss coil then manually get the screen right again with a coli or magnet or soldering gun or whathaveyou.

see if leaving the coil unplugged keeps it good. you may have a faulty PTC control for the coil that is instead keeping it on and magnetizing things.
