Would you offset your coin door to fit big woofer?
« on: January 16, 2016, 02:18:13 pm »
Ok, I have a build going on on a short cab. It looks very similar to you basic cabinet, but about a foot shorter so you can play sitting down. this leaves me with about a area of 30 wide by 21 high to put a coin door. This has never been an issue in the past, I just centered it.

This cab is also a stereo jukebox with some expensive speakers that need to be shown off.

I need have the 10" woofer on the front to show it off but my coin door will need to be way off to one side.

Be honest will this look totally stupid :dunno

They treated me like an animal and that's what I became.

Subwoofers are non directional. I'd mount it to the base and have it firing downward. Not understanding why you are looking to show it off, but to each his own.

Yes, I never liked the builds with huge speakers in the front.

Maybe build a dedicated Jukebox instead of mixing everything together?

Nice work a1pharm; the profile of our cabs look very similar.

I teach math, art, and wood shop at an inner city school in the ghetto and showing off your speakers is a thang, if you an't slappen some dope ass speakes, peps be dissing you.

The rest of my cabs have speakers hidden behind a few router slots.

I wanted to port the woofer out the back.

My students have never played anything older than xbox 360, so right now they are more excited about the speakers.  :banghead:

Do they make a cab stretcher? If I had two more inches I could solve all my problems. :hissy:

Just don't have a coin door.  The subwoofer can be it's replacement.

HOLD UP! I just saw a pic of an original space invader cab and it had the door all the way to the right. It looks like space invader deluxe did as well.

I was not lost and looking  for you guys to talk me into something I knew was going to look funny. Its the other way around; deep in my soul I'm a purist and it was screaming to get out. I don't even like subwoofers, it was my subconscious saying you son have strayed, throw away that LCD and move that coin door to the right, ditch that joystick, all you need is two buttons to achieve video game nirvana.  :soapbox:

Sega Turbo has the door off to the right with a big woofer on the left.

Also, Sega Turbo was basically the last game made that had a big woofer in it.

You wouldn't be the first (as already stated above). Here's another example.

Sketchup is your friend.  Plan it out and get some concept drawings so see how it looks!

Would I offset my coin door to fit a big woofer?

No.

Me either. Woofers are generally omnidirectional. So if you insist, face it downward under the cab or face it backwards on the back of the cab.

From an audio perspective it would be better to have it in another position. From an aesthetic perspective there could be a point having it at the front panel if done right = incorporated in the overall design.

I did a mock up and it looked OK. I have them diagonal from each other and the coin slot for the player one is lined up with the center of the cab, So its ergonomicaly correct.

I thought it looked OK in the mock up its just I never see it done but then again folks don't always stick big sound systems in their cabs.

This is my 5th cab and I just want everything over the top.   Again, I agree the woofer could fire down and be more efficient but I am working in "da hood" and my students are inspired by by big speakers that go boom.  :timebomb:

BUT, the first two sounds that come out of this cab will be some early 80's metal or hard rock then that cool sound MRS Pac-man cabs make when you drop in a quarter GALUUMP!  :applaud:

I'm an 40 something white guy so the rap my students listen to drives me crazy :hissy:
