Need help getting my version of roms to work
« on: December 25, 2015, 02:17:54 am »
    Hi guys

Newb here needs some help. I downloaded the latest version of MAME tonight for my computer a wondows 7 64-bit laptop. Any way i wanted to test out playing capcom vs marvel 2. So i downloaded a rom i found and stuck it in the mame roms folder.

Now when i click the mame shortcut a screen comes up that says @type name or select: (random)"

"Mvsc2 marvel vs capcom etc "

Configure general inputs or exit

When i click on the game i get this message:

The selected game is misding one or mire required ROM or CHD images. Please select a different game.

So im assuming the rom i downloaded is incomplete. Would any one happen to know where i can find the correct Roms?

Try Google.

You can't ask for ROMs on here. It's in the rules somewhere. Hopefully you can appreciate why that rule exists?!

I simply called all the major players (Nintendo, Bally, Namco, Taito, etc.) and they emailed them to me.

No problem bro. Sorry nobody else helped you out yet.

Here is the link. You'll need the original arcade board . This is how all of us here do it.

pfft ... the rules say we can't post about where to obtain copyrighted material, not that we have to be unhelpful.

To the OP: Often you will find that a "parent" ROM is required.

For example, if you downloaded the US version of MvC, I believe (it's been a long time) you also need the Euro version.

EDIT: Never mind ... I had the wrong game

you're wasting your time anyway, marvel vs capcom 2 is from an era of hardware too new to run at playable speeds in MAME anyway, even on the best hardware you can buy.

First of all, the obligatory Rule 5 reminder.   :police:

If you change your question to "Which files do I need to make it work?", we can help you with that.

Good news: There is no .CHD file for MVsC2.

Bad news: It is not a great choice for testing since it is still marked "Not Working" AFAIK.

In addition to "mvsc2.zip", there are two bios files that you'll need: "naomi.zip" and "mie.zip"

MAME should be telling you this info when you try to run MVsC2.

If MAME isn't telling you what files are missing, you probably downloaded a "no-nag" version.

Get the official release -- the "nag" screens are there for a reason and will help you if you let them.

Once you get everything working with the official release, you can drop in the "no-nag" executable.   ;D

Additional info for Duhjoker : Those two also go into the 'roms' directory.

You can put some time into configuring NULLDC, or another of the dream cast emulators.  The DC has a pretty accurate port of MVC2.

I apolagize but i wasnt exactly asking for roms. I was asking for information on how to find them. Also not asking for illegal roms. I have no problem paying for anything. I just dont know what im looking for. And just search google doesnt help if you dont know what your looking for. Plus i dont normally post until after ive searchec and come to dead ends. Sorry for any misunderstanding.

Thanks guys for your help. You guys game!! And helping me figure out how to get the game working. I have all i need now to start building my cocktail cab.

Im using this real dense and extremely hard plywood for the cab. I want to go with wood grain so it matches my furniture. Now are these cabs with the nice wood grain you see on google, are they using a veneer over the ply wood?

I could use a lil help finding edge trim too, but i wont be able to route a center line though with out tearing it up. Maybe something pre-adhesived or that i glue well?

Ok no asking where to find roms

Are there different versions of mie and naomi? Am supposed to extract the files from the two zips? I put both zips in the roms naomi shows up in the games list but says not working says its fir 1998 sega.

When i click on marvel vs capcom it say driver not working the id is 2000,Capcom / marvel.

The files do not need to extracted, they just have to be in the roms directory. The 'Naomi' listed in the games list is no game, it's an operating system for Nami games, so it's normal that you can't start it.

Chances are good that even if you do everything right, the game still won't work because mame has problems with a lot of Naomi games. It will probably be easier to use the Dreamcast version which is nearly identical to the aracde version and use a Dreamcast emulator, like harveybirdman said.

Are there different versions of mie and naomi?
According to the "mameinfo.dat" file, as of 0.166 (latest version I have handy) the last changes were to mie in 0.158 and naomi in 0.146u3.

Check the "what's new" files or the latest "mameinfo.dat" file to see if anything has changed since 0.166.

Am supposed to extract the files from the two zips?
No.  Leave them zipped and in the ROMs folder, just like you leave the ROMs zipped and in the ROMs folder.

I put both zips in the roms naomi shows up in the games list but says not working
As Haze and I mentioned above, not surprising that it is labeled "not working" since no existing CPU has the horsepower to run this driver properly and AFAIK, MAME still has it marked as "Not Working".   ::)

Ok found a tutorial.

Im supposed to download Makaron v12. I cant find v12 but can find V12.5 and V12.7. Any way im told it will download a folder but all i get is a single file. When i click on it it asks what program to open it.

Any clues as to what im doing wrong?

It's probably an archive for which you don't have the unpack program installed. What is the exact filename ?

Ok first i was supposed to visual basic c++ then add a service pack to it. Did that. Then downloaded the file Makaron_T12_5-1975 (full file name) and place folder in the desktop. Then naomigd.zip and place a file from that into the makaron folder. But like i said makaron is not a file. The file type is 7Z.

I dont want to get any more trouble but i can post the link to the tutorial if it will help.

Also i can get street fightet 2 to work. The game looks and plays great but the sound skips and repeats.

Can mame handle 32 bit games? Or are 16 the best bet?

That's what I thought. File type 7z is an archive. You need to download the free '7-zip' program which you can use to unpack it. After that, you get your Makaron folder or a setup program for Makaron, which will create the folder you need.

Guy, if you downloaded latest version of MAME and its your first time chances are you are struggling because it's the command line version. Just get yourself MAMEUI (Google for it) that version comes with the interface all you have to do is to point to the directory where roms are and it will work right away. Much easier than struggling with command line.

He doesn't struggle with Mame, he is lacking a certain file to get his game working. Unfortunately we cannot help him because of rule 5.

I just got that impression after reading he didn't know what 7z is. That would suggest he is a complete newb to MAME in general.

Besides by using MAMEUI he could run audit much easier.

Sorry not trying to go around rule 5, All right so that means you cant even tell me the name of the file i need? According to the tenth post by PLI thats what i can ask.

Which MArvel vs. Capcom rom are you trying to run ???

Is it the parent rom (mvsc.zip) or one of the child roms ( like the US version - msvcu.zip ) If one of the children roms you'll also need the parent rom also. In addition most Capcom games use QSOUND so you will need the qsound.zip file if using a newer version of Mame since they split out most of the sound emulators into their own rom packages awhile back.

So for the parent Marvel Vs. Capcom game you will need

mvsc.zip and qsound.zip

in addition if running one of the child versions you will need those 2 + the version specific rom such as mvscu.zip ( for US. version )

But the main thing you need to learn is how to find the specific files needed for any specific rom so that someone does not need to specify exactly the files you need for every game which is what everyone before is trying to assist with so that you can audit the files yourself and figure out what is missing and can then find those files ( Mameui64 - has an audit selection that will audit the list of files needed and tell you what is missing and also the original MAME.exe direct from the developers will display what is missing when you launch the game which is why it is best to use it at first to learn how to find the missing files rather than use some compiled version that removes those screens and just does not run the game if something is missing (thus the suggestions to download directly from MAME rather than get a version compiled by someone that removes the nag and informational screens making it hard to audit missing files !! )

Right now the first game since mame says it does work. I have both mvsc and mvscu

All right so mameui64 will tell me what i need?
In mameui64 go to the game selection and right click and select audit and it will check and report what is missing For example below is if I rename qsound.zip in my rom folder and run an audit :

IT tells me it is missing qsound.bin which I then can go and look for and will find in a package named qsound.zip (it used to be included in the mvsc.zip package but the MAME developers split many of the sound and bios files out to their own packages several releases ago so now is in it's own qsound.zip file that needs to also be in the rom folder for the game to work.

So I can either add qsound.bin from the qsound.zip file into the mvsc.zip file or place qsound.zip which has the qsound.bin file in it into the rom folder - by doing either mame will find the missing file in either one of the packages and load it when the game is launched. ( Mame searches the zips for the files it needs and will use the first one it finds during it's search unless it does not find it at all in which case it errors and lets you know what is missing.

Right now the first game since mame says it does work. I have both mvsc and mvscu

All right so mameui64 will tell me what i need?

Not only will it tell you what you need, it will also play it once you have it. It's MAME with inerface.

Mvsc works now. Thank you guys!!!'

Ok i could also use some help getting nulldc going.

Ive tried several different times using several different tutorials but i cant get it to work.

It says d3dx9_43.dll is missing even though i have downloaded it to the nulldc data folder.

And unable to load drkPvr_Win32.dll, error level= -104, then it brings up a screen to select  plugins

I might be off on that as I don't use NullDC, but the files you quoted are either part of DirectX or Microsoft Visual C++ redistributable, you might be either missing that or need newer versions or reinstall to fix if something got corrupted ...I think.
