My Supergun
« on: September 04, 2015, 12:19:48 am »
Not sure if this is the right place to put this but I got distracted from building my arcade cabinet with this project and thought I would share. I have picked up several more arcade boards and thought it would be useful to have a supergun/jamma test rig for them. I should have done a better job of taking more pics during build but its more or less a box that I made and then routed the edges to make it look nicer so that part isnt too exciting I suppose.

The artwork is more on the simple side but still in traditional theme with my Vewlix cabinet. I may do some more tweaks to the design.

Next to the Jamma harness is an adapter I made for all of my kick harnesses using a 9pin molex type connector, they all have the matching end so I can switch easily (cps1/cps2/namco/st-v). I choose that type of connector because it is used on a bunch of other arcade items I have and looks like it belongs vs. other computer type connectors like a DB25. I actually might change it out and put a panel mount 9 pin din connector on the back so I dont have a cable hanging out to make it look cleaner.

In case anyone is curious what is made of:
- 1/2 MDF board
- scrap wood for corner braces which also support the CP.
- IEC power outlet
- screw terminal power supply which I de-cased so it takes up less space but still have a shield covering it so no mishaps.
- Gonbes 8200 CGA to VGA (once I got it all tweaked does a decent job)
- 2 DB15 connectors wired to neogeo standard (+ extra wires for kick harness use) so I can plug in player 1 and 2 controllers. Player 1 in case I want something more comfortable.
- Sanwa buttons and stick for important controls and so I can use the box itself as a controller.
- One speaker I pulled out of a computer that actually sounds pretty good. It's a small oval shape so fits great.
- 1 DPDT switch so I can switch the audio from internal, external or off.
- 2 RCA connectors for the external sound.
- 1 25ohm rheostat pot with knob for volume control of both internal and external sound. Just makes it more convenient.
- 1 line level audio converter for external sound output.
- 1 jamma harness which I should have shortened the wires since the extra though wound up tightly takes up a good amount of space.
- 4 nice size rubber feet I wasnt using from a computer case.

I may add a JROK video converter and add panel mount video connectors for rca, svideo and component down the road. I went VGA since I mainly use a Samsung 19" LCD monitor or a 19" Sony Trinitron tube monitor. My monitor in my cab also takes VGA. Trouble is my main plasma TV doesnt take VGA (I thought it didnt but never double checked) and my Sony Trinitron 32" CRT TV doesnt either. The TV takes svideo but the plasma does not. Really annoyed no svideo or vga on the plasma. I have no good single solution. I ordered a VGA2HDMI adapter for plasma to see how that works since the vga 2 rca composite adapter I picked up does not do a very good job. Unless anyone has better ideas?

I need to touch up the paint still. It chipped from opening and closing this thing a crazy amount of times and I tweaked, changed and added several things. The original design was far more simple.

Nice one

I made last year a xbox arcade stick with a slim look for good playable feeling on my lap.
Is your box not to high?

Great looking and hope to see some video soon  :applaud:

Nice supergun! Wouldn't really call it a test rig though.

Greetings

Its about as tall as an xbox 360. It's a bit heavy to put on my lap so I have it on a table in front of me or I plug a neo-geo stick into the player 1 port if I want to relax on the couch. I am either going to get a pre-made 6 button fight stick and modify it or make my own to take full advantage of the extra buttons to plug in to the front ports.

I was thinking, do I really even need a line level out audio converter if I have a volume control hooked up before it gets to any of the outputs? Would free up some space inside.

Tried out the VGA2HDMI converter and it works great. Trying to think how I could integrate it inside the box. Trouble is the 12pin vga header on the gonbes 8200 board doesnt seem to actually output anything other than multi colored stripes.

Added Hdmi output, led voltage display, changed vga output, cleaned up all the internal wiring and added RGB color controls.
