Super Pac-man restore
« on: September 16, 2015, 01:59:39 pm »
Well, I've had this thing in storage for about a year.  Picked it up here in the forums from user stan2323 and planned on working on it once I bought my house.  This summer I was finally able to bring it outside to clean it up and sand it down.  My plan is to restore the outside (may make some cosmetic changes/sacrifices here and there).  But I still want the overall theme to be Super Pac-man.  (I may change the CP overlay and marquee, not sure yet).  I want a multi-pac eventually, but for now I may just put either a 60 in 1 in there with all Pac-man games enabled, or an old PC with MAME and all the Pac-man games.  Either way, I love the notch in the cabinet so I MUST have the Super Pac-man on the sides.   ;D

First, I would like to give a shout out to stan2323.  He was moving from down south up to West Point, NY which wasn't too far from me.  He PM'd me and asked if I would want it or he was going to toss it.  He said he could have it shipped up here along with his household stuff at no cost.  I agreed in order to save it.  When he moved here he contacted me and patiently held it in his garage for a while (thanks so much for this!).  My buddy and I finally came and picked it up, where we moved it to storage for about a year in my buddy's garage (thanks Chris!).

Here's the condition of the machine when I got it:

Monitor has some burn in, but I plan to attempt a tube swap (Compatible tubes for the G07's are hard to come by I hear but I need to be patient).  In the meantime I may just put a de-cased PC CRT in there until I find a donor TV that fits.

My buddy Chris and I picked it up in his truck:

~~~  Then it sat for a year.  ~~~
Once good weather hit, I decided to strip it down and remove the paint.  That way I could bring it inside and work on the paint over the fall.
The hardware is in good shape as was the cabinet itself.
The monitor was filthy, so I cleaned it it up by giving it a bath in Simple Green and a garden hose.  It's completely safe.  Even captured it on video on my Youtube Channel.
Took pics of the paperwork since it would get ruined by the cleaning:
http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=136713.0;attach=335627;image
Here are the "after" pics:
Here's a video that I made of the cleaning process:
And now for the sanding:
Original artwork.  It was pretty rough and I can see why they decided to paint over it.
I used bondo here and there to make it smooth as butter and ready for painting:
More sideart.  I needed to sand it down to the wood, since it was originally stenciled on you could see the bumps from the different paint layers.  So I needed to sand it smooth.
All done!  I lightly sanded the inside as well to prep it for paint.
Paint!  What a pain this was!  I had originally found a paint code on the forums, but when I brought it in to Home Depot they said that the paint code was outdated and then had a "new" color mixing system.  So, they attempted to punch in some numbers and it looked very dark (almost black).  So I didn't buy it and went back to the drawing board.  Then someone suggested that I used the back door to color match.  Brilliant!  Lucky for me I completely forgot to sand it when I was working on the cab and I was able to clean it and bring it in.  The result, a beautiful perfect match!
More to come as I prepare to paint this thing...
Nice. I have a SuperPac board that I converted to JAMMA, with the high score kit installed.
I'm sure once I get the board that I want you will be helping me to burn to appropriate chips.  :-)
For now though, I'm pulling back the reigns and will be emulating until I can buy the right boards.
I was actually toying with the idea of running a single game on it (Pacman 20th re-union which has Pac-man, Ms. Pacman and Galaga on it).  I'm not too fond of the Super-Pacman marquee.  So I may change it out for the 20th re-union one.
If you are looking to "multipac" as in Mike Doyle 96-in-1 you will not be happy with the Super Pac-Man game play.  It's pretty horrible.
Good luck with your project.
Thanks for the heads up behrmr!  I'm not quite sold on it yet anyway.
Correction:  It will play multiple versions of Pac-man. How I achieve this is still up in the air.
Nice cab, I always kinda liked the super pac cabinet look.
You can experiment with those tv plug and play units. Most have super-pac, but for some damn reason, they never include ms. pac. The only one I know of that has ms. pac is missing super pac.  :dunno
Good idea, but I'm planning on mounting the monitor vertically.  Those TV plug and play units have modded versions to fit the horizontal display.   ;)
I'm currently working on a Super-Pac themed cabaret (was a converted and then gutted Omega Race cabaret).  I plan on using the old ArcadeShop programmable PCB in vertical mode.  An ArcadeSD would be my next choice.  The emulation on both of these boards is pretty freaking good.
Hmm. The Arcade SD has a hefty price tag though. Plus I will have most games disabled.
For now I think the 60 in 1 is winning. I'm also restoring a .vs cab so the budget is tight.
Ah, yeah, I forgot about that. I haven't touched them in years, because my experience was the video quality sucked. Since I saw other people using them in projects, I figured they had improved. Didn't even think about monitor orientation.
Scored big tonight on Craigslist!   $40 got me this:
- Burn free monitor with Weiya universal chassis
- Ms. Pacman complete PCB
- Ms. Pacman daughter board.
- original Midway isolation transformers and fuse block
- original harness
The guy had gutted it a while back for a 60 in 1 and LCD and sold the machine. It has since sat in his garage... Until now. :-)
I'm stoked. It was listed As a Pacman in the ad.  It also has the speed chip installed. It was totally worth the 90 minute drive (each way).
So I was researching coin doors today (since I need one for the completion of this project) and I came across 3-D printed ones.
Interesting:
Not sure if I'd use one, but still, cool nonetheless.
Cool! This might open up some great possibillities at least on some bartops.
And they have coin slots!  http://www.shapeways.com/search?q=coin+slot
Could also be an interesting option for bartops.
Figured it was time for a small update.  I moved my project indoors since it's been cold out.  I set up a section in the new game room just for painting.  :-)
The picture is crude, but it's the first coat of the color matched Super Pac-man blue that I grabbed from the back door of the cabinet.  Probably taken crudely on purpose, since it looks crappy close up  ;D.  Once I get multiple coats on there though I'll take better pics.
A little bit shinier:  Semi-Gloss.  The paint code is listed above on the can.
