  • I want to build my own arcade controls!
Fold out control unit
« on: September 05, 2015, 09:59:00 am »
Hi everyone.
I've finally started my first build and wondering if anyone has ever seen or made a control box that is hinged (folds out). I want something that is hidden but folds down when in use. I'm pretty sure the way to go is a V shape box that rotates at the bottom of the V, similar to some shoe cabinets.
Any help or photos would be appreciated if you have any.
Thanks,
TC

My arcade cab doesn't fold out the way that you are showing in that diagram, but it pulls out using some drawer slides to keep the side profile as small as possible.

I'm still struggling to find a good locking mechanism to keep the control panel from sliding back in if somebody jerks the controls really hard upward e.g. Guile's flash kick from Street Fighter II.  I'm using magnets to keep the control panel stable when pulled out.

That's the trouble with this kind of thing: stability. A fair bit of force (in ALL directions) can get imparted to the CP when the gaming gets heated - especially if you have a multi player CP. Same problem with CPs like the HotRod and X-Arcade. I ended up having to fix my HotRod SE down using strips of self adhesive velcro, which worked a treat.

Arcade cabs are solid and heavy for good reason. ;)
