What is your favorite "Game in a Game" game?
« on: August 17, 2015, 12:42:49 pm »
For me, Geometry Wars in the garage of Project Gotham Racing 2 on XBOX.

Honorable mention to Maniac Mansion being hidden inside its own sequel of Day of the Tentacle and double honorable mention to Pong being hidden in MKII that was hidden in Shaolin Monks.

Banjo-Kazooie, Grunty's Furnace Fun.
It was a complete surprise that there would be a game show at the end of that game. I remember the first time my friends and I made it there we had a blast, and it was a real challenge to answer the questions correctly.

I liked playing that card game in Final Fantasy 9.

If you are talking about known games that also exist outside of the game, then I played the crap out of Jetpac that is inside Donkey Kong 64. Actually the original DK was also in there, but not really my favorite

no rules for "game in a game" BlitzBall in FFX counts as much as Space Harrier in Shenmue. I was TERRIBLE at Tetra Master in FF9 :(

I liked the original Ninja Gaiden inside Ninja Gaiden on Xbox.  Was a ---smurfette--- getting it though, almost impossible on a single playthrough.

I liked playing that card game in Final Fantasy 9.

I like Triple Triad in Final Fantasy VIII better (better than the game itself).

It's now free through the Final Fantasy Portal App.

Actually you are right, I just got them confused. I liked the version in FF8 a lot more than FF9. The FF9 card game had too much chance involved.

I considered mentioning this. I had fun playing the old style with the newer controls.

Gradius in Blades of Steel. Also that handheld game in Super Mario RPG is dope. Or playing Pac-Man at the arcade in Pac-Man 2 (which is one of my guilty pleasures).

Pretty sure Rick still has it on his list of things to (re-)do.

Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to bid you all adieu. Sadly, it is time for me to part with this project. Yes, I am disassembling my 'manually assembled' Super Turbo Turkey Puncher arcade cabinet that has been moving from room to room for the past few years. And no, this project is NOT dead.  I'm planning on resurrecting this as one of my FIRST THINGS, when I have my workshop built, and when my CNC is up and running. So, yes, this project will live on. Just not in it's current incarnation.

I've looked over the work I've done, and it's ... ok. The router lines  aren't straight. The assembly isn't perfect. I've learned a lot, and I think that this is where I'm at. I know I can do better, and I'm going to "do right" by this machine... So it's not a farewell to arms. It's a ... soon to be "perfect". (Or, at least, 'better'.)

I do have a plan - and that involves a new, updated version via Solidworks, and CNC created parts to get everything "up to snuff"... So, watch for updates in the coming months. I promise this - the project is not dead. It's just ... resting.

:D

Liar's Dice is awesome (IRL too!), and nothing beats playing some Texas Holdem on the patio of a Mexican Cantina.  ;)

You guys aren't talking about the same thing. Ginsu is talking about the arcade game Galaga/ Ms Pac-Man Reunion arcade cabinet where you can unlock Pac-Man and play Galaga without credits on the attract mode.

Bruce, however, is talking about the adventure game for SNES/ Genesis called Pac-Man 2: The New Adventures. In it is a virtual arcade where you can play the original Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man 2 (SNES)/ Jr. Pac (a Genesis original).

I recall getting a kick out of being transported into a Pac Man maze in Ultima Underworld where you became a first-person pacman picking up gold pieces (I think) and were chased around by ghosts.

Maybe slightly off topic, but searching for the easter egg in the original Atari Adventure cartridge was, for a time, more fun than playing the game as intended.
