  • I want to build my own arcade controls!
After I finished my setup on my original computer, all was working pretty good (with HLSL enabled) until I hooked up all the usb cables and soon realized that my 250watt PS wasn't going to cut it. So now I am looking to purchase a computer with the specs below. Would this computer work with full HSLS enabled on modern mame games?

i5 2ghz
1gb Nvidia GTS 250 Video card
4GB RAM
750watt Power Supply.

Thanks for any info.

That should handle pretty much any game with full HLSL. However, you MAY be better off getting a CPU with a higher frequency. Something over 3Ghz say, even if it's an i3 instead (which is what I use).

Ya can't really find anything like that in my price range. I found that system for $190 CAN.

Will that i5 2ghz really give me a hard time with HLSL?

No, any i5 is unlikely to give you any trouble - far from it. The GFX card handles the HLSL, anyway. I was just thinking 3+Ghz CPU because MAME seems to like processor speed over anything else (such as number of cores).

P.S. you know i3 is cheaper than i5, right?

Better choice will i3 than i5. Single core performance is all that matters.

If the original computer works fine except for the power, why not just upgrade the power supply for it?

Yes. That computer is on kijiji and nothing else is really listed in the area for that price, even i3's. Thanks again for the info

Then I'd go for that i5 rig. I was just nit-picking, really, thinking you may have the option to go for a faster i3, and possibly save a few dollars. Must say, it sounds amazingly cheap for an i5!

Well its a low profile HP computer (from work) and the motherboard has no 20/24pin power plug so I would have to buy a special power supply from HP I guess, can't really find any at stores. And also, I thought that my video card is/or may give me problems since it is only a HD4550. So I figured I would just look for a new older PC online which better PS and video card and just put in my original hard drive.  :-\

Ya really, that's what I was thinking.. Not that it matters but the computer is all NVidia related with a kick ass case.

So found another computer for sale in my area. It is a AMD 750k Quad core 3.4ghz, 8gb ram,  geforce gtx460se,  antec power supply.

So what do you guys think?  The computer listed right above or the i5 I was talking about early in this thread? Both are roughly selling for the same price.   Thanks for any advice.

Look here for comparisons - http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,146276.0.html

and - https://www.cpubenchmark.net/singleThread.html

750k on single core is even slower than i3 560 and just a bit faster than stock E8500.
I'm not recommending AMD unless can be bought very cheap - lots of heat and high power consumption. With this PC you hovewer much better graphic card.

What is exact model of this i5?

Thats the ---smurfy--- part. The guy selling the i5 doesn't have a hard drive installed in it, so he says he is not sure the exact model.
