Lets watch Malenko turn GoldenTee98 back into UMK3!
« on: May 04, 2015, 10:23:13 am »
Because I havent finished TMNT yet, but I still have too many irons in the fire.

Here is how I got Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 Golden Tee98:

stripped the CPO and swapped the marquee:

sadly the MK3 board I got with the cab was DOA

guess they had to make room for the trackball!

Luckily I got a UMK3 board from MK3Fan, with the UMK3TE public beta roms:

Ok, so to get the cab to sit level again, I have to fix the busted wagon wheel on the back:

A little wood glue, and some longer screws later.......

time to start wiring up the cab to make it playable:

The harness was kinda hacked up to compensate for the track ball. The best way I could think of to rewire it without having to trace all the wires, was wire up a button to the ground, then put a wire on the NC contact, hit the button, and see what comes up on the test switch screen:

using my trusty NHL Open Ice orange start button!

Annnnnnnnd about 2 hours later, wiring is complete and fairly tidy!

UMK3TE public Beta select screen, its like the juggernaught hack but with some other changes:

Jax vs Noob

I have bought replacement front art for the CP, but Im not sure if I want to strip the paint off the sides. Its a ton of time and work for no real improved value of the cab (IMHO)

so , thanks to MK3Fan, I got the front art, and thanks to stpcore I got it printed:

Now everyones favorite part, getting rid of this ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---:

I have a new favorite paint remover:

A little bit of progress:

WOAH, We're half way there......

and done this side:

there is just a little bit of paint on the bottom (both sides actually) that just wont come off. Its good enough for me.

Applied the PURPLE tmolding:

laid it back down, and got to work on the other side:

feels so weird scraping Lia Montelongo and Brian Glynn chests.

starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel:

MIDWAY done scraping this logo /pun

all the way done so you can see the MIDWAY logo

just need to get the rest of the purple tmolding ordered and installed, then Im done!

That remover seems to work wonders.

using it right, and scraping with a 2" scraper for about 10 hours works wonders.

totally forgot this pic:

Impressive. I had no idea you could rescue artwork that had been painted over like that. Nice job.

That remover seems to work wonders.

I went out and bought some at Lowes today, thinking it would remove the paint on my Stargate cab.  Well it cleans up the dirt pretty good and the odd drips of white paint, but the undercoat is still there.  I'm thinking if it would be better leaving the blue paint on.  It works OK but just don't get any on you.

I'm sure the artwork is hidden under this blue coat, but is there another method to get this blue ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- off?

<I will insert pic>
If I had only one wish, it would be for three more wishes.

You have to remove the paint 1 layer at a time. The stuff I bought is for removing latex based paint, if its enamel you need to use something else.  If it is latex paint, the only way to use the stuff is to leave it on longer and scrape harder. When I paint scraped Mortal Kombat 4 , Mortal Kombat , and Killer Instinct it took at least a dozen hours each. This time with the UMK3 cab, it only took a total of maybe 6 hours. Whatever you do, dont use Citristrip unless you want to strip it down to the bare wood.

You had me hooked until..."I applied the purple t-molding."  ;)

Great job! Glad I could help.
Current collection - 28 cabs, 4 pins. (32 machines and not enough room)

Pretty amazing how the paint came off like that and the side art was still in good shape. Can't imagine painting over that artwork, but hey when you gotta have Golden Tee, I guess you gotta have it.
