Poll: Functional but not finished
« on: February 13, 2015, 02:10:07 pm »
I've read over and over on this site many varied opinions on what is good/bad/better/best/etc.  But there does seem to be two things that almost (I hesitate to say all) all of us agree on.

1)  Orient your joysticks straight up.
2)  Beware of Functional but not Finished.

In working on my build I got #1 right....but wow, have I fallen into the trap of #2.  I still have a lot of things to do both in construction, wiring, configuration, software, etc for my build but it has been largely functional for the vast majority of games now for several months and my productivity on completing it is completely shot.  So many fun games, many of which I haven't played in 25+ years.  So many games that I loved as a kid or really wanted to try more but never had the chance.  So many games that were too tough as a child.

I am having so much fun with this thing that I really spend any time I could use working on it to play.  I'm sure at some point the novelty will wear off and I'll swing more time back around to working on it.  But right now, two months in, I'm still totally hooked.

How about everyone else?  Get stuck?  Still stuck?

Drastically stuck in this stage.  So much, that it is like I haven't started.  The computer is out because I used parts to update it.  Too many other things to list.

I've missed all 3 games of the new High Score Challenges this year.

Should I have added an option for I was functional but now I broke it ?

haha.

No. Just waiting on weather more conducive to being outside and cutting.  In the mean time I may just put things back together and suffer through so I can at least play some games.

Really the only thing left to do was to clean up some launch scripts and make a few emblems.
I could have forgone the emblems, ignored the games which launch needed cleaned up and caledl it finished.

Then I switched to hacked xbox360 pads and now need to write scripts for a dozen games.
On the other hand, I'm thinking about just going back to the keyboard encoder instead.

When it's done, I won't be interested in it any more.
It will be a sad day when I call it finished.
I'm fine with that day never coming.

My cab is long finished but there's those little things that I just never got around too.
Things as simple as throwing some leds on my coin rejects. I've got everything for it but I just keep forgetting.

Last week I had my son help me change one of the joysticks and....
Let's just say he was having attention and focus issues. We were gonna do some other odds and ends after that but I felt it was best left for another time

My basement is filled with unfinished projects.  Some of the stuff is out of my expertise.  I get frustrated and just walk away. I need to get it done before it gets nice out. Because then I have to focus on working on the house!
