So they DID build "Bartops" back in the 80's!
« on: February 13, 2015, 02:01:05 pm »
I have never seen this before, but apparently they did make bartops back in the 80's also. So to all you bartop haters in here: Up yours!  :lol

No, it's a base to make it look like a cabaret.  :lol

Edit: this cab is from 1980. They didn't have keyboard trays back then:

If that's a bartop how would you play it being eye level with the joystick?

Jim, oh, Jim, he's talking to you...

Actually, Nintendo made them, too...

And that image you posted is just a cabaret on a stand. No way that would work on top of a bar.

At a quick glance that looks like a microwave....now that makes me want to turn my overhead microwave in my kitchen into a hanging bartop so I can play arcade games while waiting for dinner to cook.

That is not a bartop.

That is a Euro sit-down cabinet propped up to be played as a cabaret.  it's akin to doing this:

I'm not on the #nobartops train, but I am advocating #noweecadebartops.

You'd really have to have to lower the bar for that
That's a cabaret.

Well, if that is a bartop, I wouldn't be able to play it being just below 5.7 feet tall/short...

Well if you remove that base, it's not an upright nor a cabaret.

Seems like this is difficult for people to understand.

It's not a bartop. It's not a cabaret. It's a sit-down cabinet, akin to the Japanese "candy" cabinets, the white gel-coated fiberglass ones that requires you to be sitting on a chair to comfortably play.

I have seen those in person, you would need to be about 8' tall to play one of those on a bar.

The Playchoice bartop was a complete and total failure, that is why there are so few of them. No one wanted to pay money to play with dinky baby joysticks on a teeny screen.

I have also seen bartop Golden Tees and bartop Arkanoids. Also failures.

While most of the "bartops" people are building today either seem to to fall into one of two categories.

#1. Full sized cabinet with the bottom half missing.
#2. A netbook with a gamepad would have been better.

I think this is a very charming cab design, great for a little multi to sit in the corner.

While the mad alien posted here is not a bartop, it is still true that Bartop machines do date back to even further back then the 80s.
The first pong machine that was installed by Bushnel and Alcorn was in fact a bartop.
So really it was a bartop machine that really got this whole video game coinop industry rolling.

Is a bartop a unit that goes on top of a bar? :dunno
