  • Try and fail, but don't fail to try
        Hey Guys I just finished Jacie's arcade and I have one more to do before Christmas, so time is very limited. So when I was building Jacie's arcade my nephew came up to me and said "Hey uncle Jay will you build me an arcade too. " I said sure Uriah, how could I say no to your cute face". To be honest I am completely over building arcades for a while. I have a ton of other honey-do jobs to get caught up on. So I was going to build a bar top flat pack kit and have it together in a few days. That was until I told my sister in law I was building a bar top and she said "is there any way you could make it a stand up one"? "We don't have anywhere to put a bartop" I said "sure how can I say no to your cute face". So I didn't want to build a full fledged stand up, but I wasn't sure what to build. I'm building it with constraints which are mostly because I don't want to spend a bunch of money or put a bunch of time into one. I thought about a vigilox but I needed to use a CRT monitor or a CRT TV. This is because it is all I had laying around. Also I would rather not configure another mame cabinet and have to fix it when they screw it up.So I decided to use that namco plug n play I had laying around. They also have an NES at there house  with a bunch of games I can use. I was perusing the forums when I saw the cabaret asteroids cabinet that Louis Tully built. This would be perfect and you can build it out of one piece of MDF.

 The Plan:

 1.Use Louis Tully's Asteroid Cabaret plans
 2. Use the Namco plug and play and replace the stick and 2 buttons. Probably with something I have laying around
 3. Use the 13" CRT TV I have laying around
 4. Use their NES with the cab also. It is one of those clone models that play nes/snes both so if I have take it apart I can. I thought about wiring up some NES sockets on the front of the cab. That way they can use the plug and play and the NES also, just change the input.
 5. Spend the least amount as possible. Preferably less than $150
 6. Get it done as quick as possible.

      So to get started I went to lowes and the only piece of MDF  had a crack on the edge so I got it for eight dollars. 75% off. I also had to buy some bondo screws and other sundries. So normally I don't keep track but i'm trying to prove to my wife I can build it for less than $150. It will be tight but I may be able to do it. The art would be the largest expense.

The Paint job:
      Army O.D. Green trimmed in black with black T molding. Maybe some screws on the sides to look like rivets or something
The art work:
      I figured I would have to get creative to stay under $150. Obviously a cutesy arcade won't cut it with this kid. So he is into the military thing right now. Except when my little girl makes him play dolls. The title "Depleted Uranium" is a take off from his name Uriah. So I was hoping to get some Ideas for a control panel, bezel and a marquee. The CP and the bezel I think are on the same board like 21" x 18", and the marquee would be small like on an asteroid cabaret.

I was thinking something on the lines of like a tank control panel.The sides I was thinking about stenciling a big star on each side. This is definitely a WIP. So if you creative F'ers would maybe give me some Ideas for the CP/Bezel and the marquee I would be forever indebted to you.So I cut the boards out tonight (no pics yet) and will put it together tomorrow.

I got around to taking some better pictures my last ones blew

Maybe a camo look for the sides instead of just the green - Walmart has a 6 pack of spray paint cans for $15

And a pretty good youtube video of the process -

X should be around 10 inches  - from LT's drawing one side of that upper triangle is 10.5 inches and other is 3.5 inches (48 - 44.5) so using A^2 + B^2 = C^2 would give you 3.5^2 ( 12.25) + X^2 = 10.5^2 (110.5) so X^2 = 98.25 (110.5 - 12.25) or approx. 10 inches ( 10^2 = 100 )

I have 2 CRT's sitting around and no LCD's, so thats why. I cut out all the parts and sanded them in an hour and a half.

10" will work. Mine is just a little shy of 10, I didn't even measure that part to be honest. I just eyeballed the placement of the top panel and picked a spot that looked good. The vertical cabaret cab has a 10.5" top and the Asteroids cabaret has a 10" and I used this template for both. It works either way.
Thank you sir!  :notworthy:

It's also in this pic from the OP of LT's Asteroids Deluxe Cabaret thread.

The rest of the math is just plugging numbers into the Pythagorean theorem and solving for the unknown value.

Blue side measurement is variable a.
 * The sheet of wood is 48" tall and the back of the cab is 44.5" tall.  48" - 44.5" = 3.5"

Black side measurement is variable b.
 * The unknown value.

Red side measurement is variable c.
 * This side is 10.5" per the pic above.

a2 + b2 = c2

(3.5 * 3.5) + (b2) = (10.5 * 10.5)

(12.25) + (b2) = (110.25)
    Subtract 12.25 from both sides of the equation

(b2) = (110.25) - (12.25)

b2 = 98
    Take the square root of both sides of the equation

b = 9.899494936611665

Got Started on the build this evening. It was really cold so I had to breakdown and spend $8 for kerosene for my heater. Everything is still going together fairly smooth.This seems to be a fairly easy construction.

It looks like some of your panels are splitting, are you drilling through the mdf?

Yeah I drilled them, didn't use a big enough bit. Not a big deal glued and clamped them. If you look LT my concrete is spitting too.

My art is always free for you to download and modify as you see fit...
Why?... because I could never find any art I loved on the net. So I played around with Photoshop and wish to share it with the arcade community.

I like it, what about a more military themed font.  Something like the old A-Team.

I googled military font and here were two that looked good to my eye.  I like the ArmyA one better personally.

To be honest I have no real clue how to do this stuff, I use gimp instead of photoshop, and I just youtube how to do it.It's a shot in the dark most of the time.Sometimes it looks right sometimes it doesn't.
