Spray Painting Plexi - to Edge of LCD?
« on: August 13, 2014, 09:17:48 am »
Hi folks:  I'm redoing the plexi glass that covers the LCD monitor and was wondering if I should spray paint such that the I cover right to the INNER edge of the LCD monitor?  Right now, I have it such that I have sprayed painted in a way that it covers flush to the outside edge of the LCD monitor.

Thoughts?

Thanks

to the edge of the panel itself looks better in my opinion. just doing to the bezel just kinda make it look like you didn't do anything at all.

+1.  You want give it the illusion that the outer edge of the monitor's casing is not there.  Only the actual viewing area of the screen should be visible.

Thanks all.....wouldn't it be a disadvantage though to flush it completely to the inside bezel since if someone is viewing the game/arcade from the side, the angle would cut into the screen view?   :-\

No, because a) your glass isn't that thick and b) I'm assuming the bezel is sitting directly on the screen and c) it would have to be a pretty extreme angle.

If you don't de-case the monitor there is some space between the glass and the screen but in practice it is no problem even on maximum viewing angles...

Ok guys - thanks.  I wished I posted this earlier - last week I already spray painted a piece of plexi for LCD vertical configuration and this week I'm working on the horizontal placement.  I wonder for the vertical one that I've already done, if I can just use black electrical tape on the plexi to flush it to the inside of the bezel.

Black electrical tape on there will only let you down. It won't stick perfectly flat and straight and it will eventually start to come off.

I did that with A Little Rage, and it turned out pretty good.
Heres how I did it.
Mounted monitor and plexi. used frog tape to tape a rectangle that marked the screen part of the monitor. Used frog tape because it does not leave a residue, paint wont soak through, and its easy to remove.
Removed plexi. Flip it over and frog tape the inside of the rectangle made by the frog tape on the other side of the plexi. Filled inside the whole rectangle.
Taped outer edges of plexi to prevent paint from spilling through to the other side.
Spray painted the plexi with black. Alowed to dry, put on another spray coat. let it dry overnight.
removed frog tape, flipped over removed rectangle frog tape.
Inserted plexi back over monitor and it looked great.
The only thing I don't like about this method is that if you want some art on the bezel around the monitor, its near impossible.
Maybe place the cut out art on the plexi with some kind of clear glue, then paint over it? Or stick on art on outside of plexi?
Link below in my sig if you want to check out finished product.

Maybe I'm confused by the comment, but couldn't you just mask off with tape and re-spray to bring it in closer? Sounds like you just under-sprayed your vertical config and could just add a little more spray to fix. Or is the concern that a second spray wouldn't look right going on after the first?

the electrical tape is a band aid fix, I tried it on my "Checkered Past" cab, ende dup masking it off with frog tape and repainting.  Save yourself and do it right the first time.

just scrape it off with a razorblade and repaint, it's not worth the hassle of farting around. in the end, you just end up with something that doesn't look quite right.

the paint doesn't particularly stick to the glass, it'll come right off no problem.

Yeah but I believe he's got plexi. Won't that scratch it.
