Aimtrak recoil overheating?
« on: August 12, 2014, 01:48:39 am »
For those out there with recoil kits in their Aimtrak guns, I am looking for some suggestions as to what might be going wrong with mine. I have recently installed a recoil kit, and I am using a kodak 36v 3a power supply, which seems to be a common choice on this forum and others for the recoil kit. Everything works fine, but my recoil solenoid is getting EXTREMELY hot when playing games that involve a lot or rapid shooting. For example, I was just playing through House of the Dead, and by the time I killed the second boss (the one with the bats), the section of my gun with the solenoid was actually too hot to touch, and I could smell the burning plastic. I opened it up and saw that the plastic on the inside was in fact starting to melt a bit in a couple spots.

I haven't seen anyone else having this issue. I did notice a couple threads where people have added a machine gun mode to their gun and have noted the solenoid was getting hot, but that is firing much faster than mine is so it is understandable. I don't feel I hooked anything up wrong, the instructions were pretty straight forward and everything works fine otherwise so I would assume it is connected properly, but I'm open to suggestions. I have also made very certain there is nothing in the way of the plunger, and it slides in and out of the solenoid freely.

Anyone have any ideas?

Turn your recoil strength down, and use a DMM to see if the PSU is actually holding up 36v under peak load.

Wow, I feel kinda stupid. For some reason it never even crossed my mind to drop the recoil strength (kinda forgot I could). Dropped it down about 1/5 of the way and no more heat issues, and I can't even feel a noticeable difference in the recoil. Thanks!!
