Does this exist - 4 way rotary Joystick
« on: June 30, 2014, 12:33:32 pm »
So I'm looking at setting up a vertical digdug cabinet for MAME and I want to cover 4 way games AND spinner games...

is there a good option for a 4 way / spinner joystick?  I'd like to keep the control panel looking as stock as possible and dont think there is room on the side to squeeze in a dedicated spinner

I don't think you could turn a rotary stick smoothly for the precision needed for some spinner games.  :dunno

That's a real reach.   :dunno

Good luck with finding a 4-way stick that will turn smoothly enough to work decently as a spinner knob.   :dizzy:

IF you find one and IF you have enough depth under the panel, you might be able to couple the joystick to the spinner using a shaft coupler.

You may also be able to fabricate an arm and post setup like the one that keeps the body of the rotary switch from turning freely on a Happ Rotary Joystick. (P/Ns 96-1011-00 and 95-2507-00 below)

EDIT: On second thought, you might be able to adjust the microswitch arms or shave down the actuator (96-1012-00 -- only $2 here from Happ) on the Happ Optical Rotary stick to make it into a 4-way stick.

Anyone know if the Happ Optical Stick has clicks or if it turns smoothly? Confirmed as smooth turning here.
(IIRC the Loop-24 optical rotary stick has clicks)

EDIT2: Instead of bending switch arms or shaving the actuator, you might be able to cut off the 8-way end on the Rotary stick actuator and do the same on a Happ Super 4-way/8-way actuator so you can use the 4-way end of the Happ Super actuator on the Rotary.
Confirmed the same diameter shaft on both sticks. (The Rotary is basically a modded Super.)

The optical rotary might work. If it did you can get a 4-way joystick and use the base/restrictor plate from that on the optical. the happ rotaries use a pretty standard form factor.

How much space do you have to work with? A spinner only need take up as much space as a button

Hot glue a piece of round paper with a pattern on it to the bottom of the joystick.  Stick an optical mouse underneath it and point it at the paper.  Done.

Looks like you are trying to solve a problem that isn't there. There sits the most space eatingest spinner in my parts building on top of a stock dig dug panel and it fits.

If it was me though I would install it so it comes up through one of the button holes for the pump buttons.

You can technically put together a Wico 4-way that is also a 12 position rotary stick, but it would be completely useless. Even the optical rotary sticks aren't really useful for spinner games, just for that one game that used them.

Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

unghhhh its soooo ugly..

Yeah Im finding  that the upper tier spinners are abut button sized, I think the spinner in the left button hole would be an excellent choice.

can anyone recommend a good button sized mounting spinner less than $50?

I paid like $10-15 shipped for an Arkanoid spinner and hacked a mouse to it.  It's awesome for the three spinner games that are actually fun.
