No video in Hyperspin with HD 4400
« on: June 30, 2014, 07:43:55 am »
Hey guys,

Well I know that over in the Hyperspin forums there's one or two topics discussing that video does not play proberly in Hyperspin with Intel HD 4xxx based graphics units.
I really can't believe it.  :banghead:

This whole Hypersin stuff is making me mad.  :timebomb: Finally I got to the point to make a clean install on my new and cost-efficient Cab machine, and now this. I am really thinking of scraping the idea with using Hyperspin altogether. Is there really no way to make this work? Neither .flv nor .mp4 videos seem to work for me. I just the scrambled, blocky "videos".

Any help is really appreciated.
Thanks!

P.S.: Any suggestion for a decent video card if that's the only solution? Price is a factor here, but HLSL for MAME is an absolute necessity for me! Other than that it should handle NES, SNES, Sega Saturn and the sorts only.

Are you getting the green screen?  If so, try disabling hardware acceleration for flash videos only.  (Only works with Firefox see below)

You need to disable hardware acceleration for MP4s by watching any video at Youtube.com (it affects the MP4 settings globally).  Since the option to disable hardware acceleration is only available on Firefox when you right click the video, you'll need Firefox installed.  (It does not show this option for Internet Explorer or Chrome.)

No more green screen!  Since it's an Mp4 codec issue, it doesn't affect the hardware acceleration for the games (that I know of).

Hyperspin can't play mp4 movies on Intel HD graphics. Converting them to flv works fine for me (i5 with Intel HD Graphics 2500). They have a dedicated video converter application @ emumovies: http://emumovies.com/forums/index.php/files/file/1065-emumovies-video-converter/

Thanks for the replies guys!

I had tried disabling hardware acceleration but no luck.
Oddly enough, I do see the option in Chrome when right clicking the flash object on this site:
http://www.adobe.com/at/products/flashplayer.html

But maybe it really does only work with Firefox?

I do not really see any video playing correctly (except from the intro video). The MAME video seems to be an .flv, can it be that neither .flv nor .mp4 works?
Both is playing fine in VLC though.

In the end, converting everything to .flv might be OK since I still have lots of HDD space left, but the day for Hyperspin 2.0 might come and they say .flv will no longer be supported then. I'd rather invest in a more future proof solution then.

Going down the "get a video card" route now, well at least I check prices.
I only have a 400 W power source, so that's definitely an issue here.

I'm looking into a GTX 750 Ti right now. This will hurt the budget big time, but I assume it's still a smarter choice than, say, a GT 630?

Yes, mp4 movies do work with built in HD graphics. Maybe not all of of the HD lineup, but it works on both my iMac i5 and my dedicated i3 arcade unit. Both run built in hd series graphics.

How'd you to that. I can't seem to find any link between my issue and the topic you linked.
Please elaborate! :notworthy:

Yup, but I can't find anything about a HD 4xxx unit. Those seem to be the most affected, at least when we talk about HyperSpin 1.3.2. So this is not very helpful for my case I am afraid.  :(

I have tested the setup with some .flv files and while that is working now, I still hesitate to download a whole bunch of .mp4 videos and convert them afterwards. Even more so because .flv is simply not future proof.

Generally HyperSpin is not as fast on my cab unit than on my other PC. Is it the 4 GB of RAM,  the i3 CPU or would a dedicated GPU help smoothing the GUI transitions as well?

Yup. My comments were in response to this false statement.

Hyperspin can't play mp4 movies on Intel HD graphics.

Spent $350 to build arcade pc, and runs hyper spin like a boss on built in graphics card. But like you said, I think the hd4xxx is the series with issues. Sorry I can't be of any help as I don't have that series.

Well guys, it works!

What I did was disabling hardware acceleration for flash in IE!
It did NOT work when I did the same in Chrome, so be advised.

If you've got the same problem and want to give it a try:
Browse to a flash video (youtube or on the Adobe flash website), right click, go to settings and uncheck the box for hardware acceleration.

After that the .mp4 videos showed fine in Hyperspin with my HD 4400 unit!  :applaud:

Perfect!
This did work on my Intel NUC also!

(sorry 'bout the bump)

Hi,

I am having the same problem and have not yet managed to solve it. I tried to find the "disable hardware acceleration" setting in IE, but there is not settings option when I right click on a video. I am using Windows 10. Any help appreciated!

Edit: found a patch that fixes it, and now it works well :)

Hyperspin can't play mp4 movies on Intel HD graphics.
This is not true. Intel HD graphics certainly CAN play mp4s in Hyperspin. You just have to disable hardware acceleration in IE and/or Firefox. I've got 2 computers working like this. An intel NUC and a zotac pico 320. In fact, on the pico I had to install Firefox just for the sole purpose of disabling hardware acceleration.

This might be a decent workaround if you don't have a lot of movies. However, FLV files are substantially bigger and your HD is going to fill up unnecessarily fast with bloated files sizes.

OK... so I tried, disabling hardware accelaration in internet explorer, firefox and chrome.
I'm on windows 10. Didn't find a setting for it in microsoft edge.
I did reboot the pc in between (deep restart, shutdown /s /f  /t 0 )
Still not working :(

edit : changing to flv videos did fix it, but oly for some videos

OK, I just tested this on my Win7 x64 Pro comptuer and it works every time. I can fix the videos in hyperspin and break them again with this one simple box. I can go back and forth fixing and breaking so I know this is the setting that impacts it.

Steps:
1. Open IE and go to THIS sample flash video page.
2. Then right click on the video on that page and click "Settings"

3. Uncheck the box labeled "Enable hardware acceleration"

4. Close IE
5. Open Hyperspin and bask in the glory of working MP4s in Hyperspin.  :)

NOTES:

-Restarting my computer was not necessary
-Pretty sure this works on win8/8.1
-Have not tested this on win10 but I'm willing to bet the steps are totally different (if even remotely the same) with the Edge browser
