World Rally 2 Steering wheel collar cracked
« on: June 18, 2014, 04:29:14 am »
Hey guys,

I have a World Rally 2 dual Arcade and 1 of the steering wheel (Happ brand) collars has a crack which makes a loud click noise when turning the wheel.
I was wondering is there anywhere I can find an replacement? Or is there anyway I could wire up a Computer steering wheel to an arcade jamma?

Pictures -

Thanks

There isn't a way to swap in a PC wheel to use with the original game boards and have the ffb still work (if it has ffb).

Doesn't have the collar, but would work:

I've got a shiny aluminum one laying around, but aren't sure if I want to part with it.
Where are you located?
Shipping to NZ would probably be more than it's worth.
Vandale is in NZ and is always swapping PC wheels into driving cabs (for use with a PC or PS3).
Maybe he has one laying around.  You have too few posts to PM, so I PMd him for you.

Thanks I have emailed suzohapp for a shipping price to NZ as they were asking for my visa card details before they even gave me a shipping price.
Hopefully it isn't too high otherwise it might be cheaper just to use the 2nd cab as a Console/PC racing machine.
If "Vandale" does see this I would be keen to buy 1 from him if the price is right.

Use some Epoxy Putty.  Most especially by bluesteel  (not JB the crap)

http://www.amazon.com/Magic-6004TRI-QuikSteel-Reinforced-Counter/dp/B002UIZPR8

Ive used the plastic (white)  version of this stuff, to fix a broken laptop.   After 5 min or so... I tried to scratch it with all my might... using a steel nail.  Couldn't make a visible scratch.   The stuff is amazing.

Tips:  Make sure to sand then clean all the surface with 90% rubbing alcohol.. clean your hands...  them mix up the putty very well.  Put in place... even over-gobbing if needed..  as you can always cut and sand it down after its cured.

The strength of it in 5 min is really incredible... but I wouldn't put it through mechanical stresses for a day or two, to make sure the cure is completely and fully set to its maximum potential.   (even if the box stated full cure in less time than this.  Cure can be varied due to temperatures, pressure, humidity, how well you mixed things..etc.  )

That collar is very common: source out an old steering wheel block and take it from there. Sometimes you find it still attached to the wheel. Way cheaper than 60 dollars (!!)

Anyhow, for home use is probably sufficient some extra strong glue  ;)

Hi Madfrog.

I have the exact same wheel but its missing the hub. Its got 3 holes and that's it.

I would take it to a tig or mig welder and get him to blast the crack then just file it back to shape and you will be sweet.

Cheers

Baritonomarchetto - Yeah I was looking around on ebay for a cheap steering wheel with 1 still attached no luck yet. Hopefully 1 will pop up in NZ sometime soon.
I think I will try the glue for now till I can get my hands on an replacement.

Vandale - I will do that if the glue doesn't hold. I own a tig and mig welder at home but never been taught how to use it so I might give practice on some old bits of metal first then give it a go.

Thanks guys for you help.

Fyi - Typical glue wont hold up to the high psi stress levels of a mechanical function like that.

Epoxy might hold up... but epoxy can still crack if not supported by some bracing material.

Epoxy putty, the good stuff.. can be as strong or stronger than the original undamaged part... and no bracing material needed.

Ive used the water-safe plastic based epoxy putty, to bond two different threaded parts, to form my own high pressure adapter.
This part is not only under high pressure constantly.. but I run very hot water through it.   (Portable Dishwasher, with water heater on near max heat output)

Its been a few months.. and not a single drip of leakage, nor sign of any issues whatsoever.   The stuff is really incredible.  You could pretty much make anything out of it.
