Sugar Rush
« on: June 03, 2014, 06:33:25 am »
Hi,

I have started on a new project. It's supposed to be a birthday present for my daughter when she turns 6 i november.

As you can see the themed is based on Sugar Rush from Wreck it Ralph.

I could really use som creative input / critisism.

First up, the marquee.

Razzer.

Next up, the controlpanel.

Will be using translucent buttons and bubble ball tops.

And finally the side art.

The Black and white checkered flag has a more 3D feel too it. Any ideas as to how it can be "converted" to a pink and white flag? It's a high resolution JPG. Hue filters in PhotoShop?

T-molding color? White, Pink, Purple, Chrome, Gold? not quite sure yet.

Any input is welcome.

there are no wrong answers to this

I'd go with 2, 3, 3 and I second the idea of pink tmolding

EDIT: wrong number for side art, fixed.

Marque #2, CPO #3 and Side-art #3 with pink t-molding.

Great idea for a cabinet.  My kids love that movie.

Why you not a driving cab?!

Very cool, keep the chequered flag black and make it pop with the pink t-molding like everyone else says.  Looking good so far!

Looks neat!

I can't help but thinking that if we had littlebigplanet karting, dreamworks & madagascar karts, that surely, Sugar Rush would be a no brainer.   :dizzy:

My votes:
Marq: 3
CPO: 3
Art: 1 or 3 as with two her hair and skirt blend into the checkerboard which looks "wrong" to me.

First off, really cool! You should at least entertain the idea of having this cab work as an upright racer as well.

I know it is for a 6 year old, but I am gonna be "that guy" who is a over critical.   >:D

To be honest, the marquees don't grab me. I dunno, maybe something a little simpler with clean lines and solid colors. Maybe run the logo against a solid color and run checkers along the bottom like you have on the side art. Something about the marquees just feels a little "washed away".

I like CPO 5. Cool image, is that concept art?

I like side art 3...I love the pink checked background, but I like how the side art 2 has depth on the checkers. Any chance you can make the pink checkers have that same depth. I added a quick example of what I mean.

Also, are you gonna be able to find better a better resolution image of Vanellope? When I look at the close up of your example, she is a bit low-rez.

Why you not a driving cab?!

A driving cab seems like the obvious choice, but she's not that interested in driving games (she's more of a Street Fighter / Final Fight kind of girl).

Sugar Rush was mainly chosen because of its girly nature / color scheme + she knows it from Wreck it Ralph.

Very cool, keep the chequered flag black and make it pop with the pink t-molding like everyone else says.  Looking good so far!

I agree that a black checkered flag + pink T-molding would look great.

I have tried to make a simpler marequee (attached).

Yes, i got from here: http://www.stitchkingdom.com/disney-wreckit-ralph-hires-concept-art-stills-58019/

I like side art 3...I love the pink checked background, but I like how the side art 2 has depth on the checkers. Any chance you can make the pink checkers have that same depth. I added a quick example of what I mean.

I also like the depth of the black/white checkered flag. I am not quite sure how to change the colors (HUE manipulation in PhotoShop?) any pointers?

Also, are you gonna be able to find better a better resolution image of Vanellope? When I look at the close up of your example, she is a bit low-rez.

Yes, i have a picture that has a resolution that is twice as high. It just needs to have the solid background removed first (-> made transparent).

Thanks (to everyone) for the input. it has given me some direction.

I'll try to make a complete cabinet render to see how it all looks together.

Wow! I love the new Marquees. Probably 6 is my vote at this point.

I also like the depth of the black/white checkered flag. I am not quite sure how to change the colors (HUE manipulation in PhotoShop?) any pointers?

Well, others might have a better method, but this is the way I would do it in Photoshop.

1) Open your checkered flag image in photoshop and duplicate the layer so you will have 2 black.white checker flag layers.

2) Create a 3rd new layer above the existing two. Find a nice pink color and fill the new layer up completely with your paint bucket.

3) While the pink layer is selected, change the layer mode to something like Linear Dodge (You can play around with different modes) This will turn the checkers pink, but should preserve the lighter levels to shine through.

4) Hold Shift and select both the pink layer and the top checkered flag layer, then merge the layers to make it permanent.

5) Change the opacity of your merged layer to something like 75%, this will allow the darker blacks to bleed though.

6) Merge layers again, and you should have some pink checkers ready for bringing into your artwork. If you want to add a little stronger depth feel, touch up by hand using the dodge and burn tools to intensify the highlights and shadows or play with the contrast.

Made a couple of CPO renders just to get a better feel for the artwork.

I have also made a render of my favorite (at least for now) combination.

Great concepts, but the execution needs a bit of fine tuning on some of them.

Here are some areas where the controls and surrounds cause problems:

The first one has a lower-middle button surround arc that matches up with the bottom of the "R" and almost makes it look like "Sugar Bush".   ::)

Third one has her blindfolded by the admin button surround.   ???

Fourth one has buttons on her face. (Swap the pause and exit, and she could be Hindu. :duckhunt)

No matter how good a piece of art looks when you start, adding controls/surrounds that result in a "joynicorn", crotch-stick/button, or covered faces (especially eyes) = layout fail IMHO.  YMMV.

Scott brings up great points. Instead of a control panel that uses screenshots or characters that are going to get obscured anyway, why not make a car dashboard or something that better integrates your controls? If you study classic control panels, that's what they all do.

Like this one but as PL1 mentioned -- Perhaps have the surround behind her face rather than in front and also move the commands to the upper part rather than lower.
