As long as it works with a keyboard/controller.   But if it turns out to be mouse and keyboard diablo-style clicking, I'll lose interest fast. ;)

Knowing Steam exclusives, it'll have 10 damn buttons you only use for one thing and one thing only, but you can't progress without pressing them.

I've got high hopes for this one.  I don't want to spend $500 on a PC just to play Gauntlet Legends but that's the direction I'm headed right now.   :P

I picked up hammerwatch on steam not too long ago for a couple bucks. One of those wishlist games on sale impulse buys and never installed. Now on a Gauntlet kick finally played it and got addicted quick. Not a bad cheap little game to kill a few hours, but I'm hoping this will be cab friendly. I need more reasons to justify having the 3rd and 4th player controls  ;)

Diablo 3 on consoles is an amazing local multiplayer game.  I wish it could be made cabinet friendly but leather couches and plates of wings will do.

Thanks for sharing,

My build is Gauntlet themed, I will definitely give this a try.

Hammer watch looks good. Is it cab friendly?

Eh...

It'll support analog and digital movement, controller or keyboard defined keys, which is great. But it has too many controls for most control panels. You would think you only need a couple buttons for a game like this, but this is a steam game, after-all.

The modern theme of "8 is enough" for controls on even the simplest of game concepts has me convinced of going 8 buttons per player on my 4 player mame/emulator/steam build.

I tried to play also.  I found it difficult but I didn't configure the map.  I'd like to give it a try again.

Holy crap.  Got caught up commenting on Hammerwatch, which I do enjoy, that I forgot to watch the trailer.

That looks awesome.  If it is cab friendly, I can totally see a renaissance of gauntlet cabs.

Reminds me of Castle Crashers on Steam.  I assumed that would be great on a cabinet but once I fired it up I quickly realized it wasn't worth it.

I think for the new Gauntlet, I am hoping for 3-4 buttons max.

I hope if retains that balance of cooperative and competitive gameplay. I loved how you could play like a jerk in the first 2 games. The elf was the best character for this. Run around nabbing treasure without fighting, stealing all the potions from the wizard, shooting food, trapping others next to death. And of course making others "it" and then running away as a horde rushed at the other player.

Nobody likes playing gauntlet with me anymore for some reason.  :dunno

We need a logo, t-shirt, and website. Something to let devs know that there are people like use that want to play new games inspired by old games.

Shoot them an email here:  info@arrowheadgs.com

For the love of David Foley, keep it concise, polite, and on topic.

All we want is a way to play it with 3-4 buttons.  Nobody cares about making it run on your vector monitor.

EDIT - here's what I e-mailed them:

Hello,

Please consider making the game playable with just a few inputs.  Many people use arcade joysticks and cabinets to play newer arcade style games on Steam, and we're generally restricted to a joystick and 3 or 4 buttons per player.  I think the ability to play the new Gauntlet like this would help you sell more copies.

Thanks,

James

Cool! But way too many buttons . My machine will only have 7 per player. Hopefully it's not like mortal kombat where my brand new computer can only play it on the very minimum setting a and it looks like ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---. Street fighter looks great and works well on high settings.

But, it will play on SteamOS so that means it works with a controller.

The big question is...  Will it support multiple keyboard inputs?  Sometimes keyboards are locked to only 1 player and any extra players need to use another input method.   :banghead:

A quick search says extra controllers are needed for players 2-4. I'm away from that PC,so I can't check.

Hammerwatch is awesome. I've played through it on medium with the Paladin and I'm just playing through it again with the Wizard at the moment. It's very rare for me to play through a game more than once and I intend to complete this with all four classes.

It plays really well with a 360 controller, I'm not sure how well it would work on a CP but I might try it out.

I don't use 'Hold' but you definitely need strafe. With a six button layout I would probably go for:

Attack | Strafe | Map
Skill 1 | Skill 2 | Skill 3

Then there is just the potion. I've not used one in this second playthough so I would probably not bother with it. If I did want to use it I would just rebind one of the buttons to use it and then change it back again.

Obviously if you have more than 6 buttons and/or admin buttons then you'll have no problem.

Here is the chain for context

Hi.  I'm an arcade fan.  I remember playing the original Gauntlet on an arcade machine.

How closely will this play to the original mechanics?  How many buttons will be required to play?  I'd like to be able to reconfigure the key bindings and play with real arcade controls.  There are literally tens of us that do this.  Just kidding, thousands by the smallest count.  While that may not be your target demographic, being able to play on real arcade controls would be nice for fans of the original game.

Good luck with your release.

Quote from: Malin

Hi Eric!

Nice hearing from an old Gauntlet arcade fan! While this reboot of Gauntlet will fetch many ideas from the original game it is not only a remake of the old Gauntlet with a new skin, rather a version containing what we thougt was great about the old game, sort of like a cover of an old song. We are still working on controls and abilities to perfect them so things are not definitely set yet, and how many buttons of the gamepad is used depends on the character too.
I hope you will be able to play the game in a manner you find pleasing!
Thanks for your well wishes.

Best regards,

Malin

Looks like release date is Sept 23rd!  I'm pretty excited for this one even though I won't be able to play it on my arcade cabinet (requires Vista or Win7).  I guess we'll see if they listened to you guys requesting simple controls.  Just guessing, but from the gameplay video, it appears to use dual joysticks (you can see the wizard moving one way and shooting the other).

I was able to briefly play a little bit of this game. First and foremost, I have a gut feeling they have the gauntlet formula right. Player strengths and weaknesses, that competitive/cooperative feel. Conserving keys and hordes of enemies behind a big door. I smelt all of it. The characters have some personality, and they have the narrator telling you who shot the food. They even name the characters Thor, Merlin, Questor and Thyra. It is very much as if gauntlet legends got back to its roots even a little closer than before.

As to the question that everybody is wondering....no, it doesn't seem very cabinet friendly at all. the reason is that you end up using dual analogs. One to move, the other to aim and shoot weapons. The warrior doesn't use the analog that fiercely, but that is about it. Wizard and elf rely on it, and the Valkyrie uses it to block, and it seems she needs to do a lot of blocking. Buttons wise, I think it only uses 5, but that second analog is a bit of a kick in the nuts for people who were hoping to get this going on a cabinet.

Even though I only tried 15 minutes and haven't explored local or online multiplayer, i am gonna say this probably be a winner of a game. They force you to try every player before beginning, and for good reason, you quickly realize how different each character really is. For people who like mashing buttons at enemies, god of war style, the warrior fits the bill. There really isn't any weapon throwing with the warrior, just smashing and more smashing. The elf is speedy and can toss arrows everywhere and skip around the screen. Excellent for snarfing up all the treasure and food. He also has bombs he can drop, which makes him a surprisingly a very effective character. Valkarie, like i mentioned before is blocking based, and is still that blend between the elf and warrior. She doesn't have a regular projectile, but can throw her shield as a strong attack. I have a feeling she will still be the weak link character. I am absolutely amazed by the wizard though. I also know I will suck with him. In the tutorial, I noticed about 7 different spells I was able to conjure.  He uses a button combination system to determine what spells he will cast, and you guys who are good at button combo games like mortal kombat or street fighter will probably kick ass with him. He can cast fireballs with no effort, but more powerful spells like chain lightning, blizzards, slowness fields, energy bombs etc look like they come free but you have to get the spell off. It looks like there are still potions that everyone can use, and the wizard and the elf will still be the most effective.

I don't know yet if they are gonna have treasure rooms, or "IT" or even what death is gonna be like, but I fully expect it all to be in there. I noticed there is an upgrade shop, and the level selection was very gauntlet legends in format. I am glad they improved  the camera angles as well, the camera is always a fixed direction, so north is always north. It looks like it will be great for multiplayer, but short of having 8 analog joysticks on a cabinet, I don't see it as much of a 4 player cabinet game.

No problem! I was always a huge gauntlet fan, so I am happy to review, and at least happy the game looks pretty fun. Yeah, this will be a couch and controller game for me.

For those wondering about the controls for keyboard Here's a screenshot of the various keyboard controls for each character :

Ah, I didn't know about the relic buttons. I guess that makes the button count 7 instead of 5. With keyboard, the mouse movement needed is still that unavoidable secondary analog control.

Yep - the mouse movement controls the aim for the attack separately from the character movement direction so 7 buttons and 2 joysticks - unless you also want the EMOTE keys which adds another 4 buttons. ( So not very cabinet friendly  :dunno ) -- and the system specs needed don't seem too high as it runs at about 90FPS on my AMD X3 720 @ 3.2Ghz with a 5770 GPU ( At least in the training area - Haven't had a chance to actually play yet so not sure if during gameplay it will change ! )

Looks like the developers blew a HUGE market.  I'm sure the game will sell for those that don't mind using gamepads, but for everyone else who doesn't...

Such a shame, especially for a classic remake.

I just saw the info about this game on Steam last week.
Personally I will probably get it because it looks pretty good.
I play steam on another computer rather than my arcade so I won't mind sitting on my couch with my xbox360 controllers to play it.

http://www.greenmangaming.com/s/us/en/pc/games/action/gauntlet/#item-yt

This is a 24hr sale, so the price goes back up tomorrow.

I'm gonna pass due to the complicated controls.

I've never  played Diablo on console.  I have played this with a xbox360 controller on my pc it is how I imagine it played on a console.

I think it's good.  I don't think it was suited for arcade controls.

That and the fact that the game can be completed in 5 HOURS! WTF! :timebomb:
How can the original game from 1984 with less than 1 MB of memory have more replayability than the remake in 2014! :dizzy:

Yeah they really dropped the ball on this one -- could have been real interesting if they had included a map generator and better control layout.

I fired it up and it looked like crap, so I quit after 5 minutes.  A 5 hour total playtime actually makes me more likely to give it another shot.

Didn't someone modify it so you could play with just a joystick and buttons?

IIRC they did release a patch after a few days that let you reassign keys but the problem is the directionals of the joystick are for directional movement and then you also need a seperate set of directionals for aiming\ facing direction so you can shoot while moving( mouse is used for moving aiming direction with 2 mouse buttons for shooting in the direction between the character and the direction the mouse arrow is away from the character) and then 7 buttons ( Light Attack. Sniper Shot, Dodge\roll, Bomb, Use\interact, Activate Relic 1, Activate Relic 2 ) - which doesn't easily adapt from Mouse\keyboard or game pad to arcade controls and not many arcades would be set up to handle 4 players with dual joysticks and 7 buttons per player !
