Best Place to get 22 gauge wire and disconnects?
« on: March 10, 2014, 06:48:22 pm »
So, I am ready to start building my control panel, but I need to get the wiring to connect it all. Anyone know a good place to get all the 22 gauge wiring in various colors along with the disconnects to hook them up to the microswitches?

Wire (in bulk)... Empire Wire Supply.
Disconnects... Paradise Arcade Shop.

Alternatively, You can buy an econo jamma harness with the disconnects already installed and the wires are multiple colors.
cut off the jamma connector end and use as needed.

All kinds of wire colors:

http://www.allelectronics.com/make-a-store/category/825470/wire/cable/stranded-hook-up-wire-25-roll/1.html

Crimp terminals:

http://www.allelectronics.com/make-a-store/category/196/crimp-terminals/1.html

You'll probably use the red 3/16" quick disconnect terminals on the switches.

Hmmn, the 3/16 ones are unshielded though. Will that make a difference?

Commercial arcade games generally do not use the full insulated ones.

Second vote for http://www.allelectronics.com/index.php

Cheapest site I have found for bulk wire.

I got strippers at radio shack yesterday, work amazing, I used it to strip 22 gauge solid, 24 stranded (although you cannot strip a lot at once with them) and used them to strip the outer cover off CAT6 cable.

$20 in the store, worth every penny - save yourself the headache, and get good ones  http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3932546.  They claim to work for 10-24 gauge.  I think it would work for even smaller solid wire, stranded 24 is probably the limit in my experience.

I got a knock version of those a few months ago.  The knock-offs kinda work, but they cut the wire as often as stripping.  Pay the extra few bucks and get the good ones!

I've actually got one of those things and feel like I either need to sit down with a manual or watch a demonstration video.  Guess you can't idiot proof everything.   :lol

100' isn't exactly bulk. But I guess they do have one 1000' roll of green. But it's $47 shipped. You can get a 1000' roll from Empire for $39 shipped.

sorry, I meant non-bulk... most CP's don't need 1000 feet - Plus I like lots of different colors - so you can tell what wire is what (more reason for non-bulk)!

I wouldn't use those strippers for stripping cat6 putter jacket. You'll nick up the induvidual wires.
Those auto strippers are typically used for thhn cable which is typically used in commercial light and power.
They will also work on other cables but they're not meant for cleanly stripping outer jacket if sheathed cable.

I used them last night, worked like a charm at CAT6, not a nick on insulation of the pairs inside.

They sell by the foot. They will sell a spool. They sell shielded wire. Wire is mil spec. They sell many different colors/combos so each wire on your project can be coded. Good enough for me! I plan on using them for my arcade project as well as soon when I make an engine harness for my car.

Commercial arcade games generally do not use the full insulated ones.

Is there any reason on why not? I mean, other than cost.

Simply not needed. Plus cost is also a factor.

Well, I bought a bunch of various colors in 25' rolls from AllElectronics.com, as well as I got a 100' of black for grounding. I did order two sets of these though.

I figure if its just cost, I might like the look of these better when I am setting up the wire management.
