You've probably already done this, just asking to be thorough.
Have you checked menu settings for "power on resume"?
Have you tried turning the TV on then unplugging it and plugging it back in? On some models unplugging it puts it into auto-on mode, which then allows you to use the smart strip -- several threads on the topic a while back.
IIRC some people have even wedged the TV/monitor power button closed with a toothpick so it's always on.

There are also diagrams in other threads that show how to wire a DPST ot DPDT momentary switch so you can switch on the TV and computer at the same time. Unfortunately, Double Pole microswitches are very rare, but you might be able to make a leaf-switch stack like this:

Maybe RandyT from GGG can add something like this for his ClassX buttons?

He might not move a lot of volume on them, but it would be a really cool option.
