Simplistic Pac-Man Bartop (Project Code Name: Yellow Fever)
« on: January 05, 2014, 08:18:15 pm »
Little bit of back story: Christmas 2012, i received a Namco Plug & Play Pac-Man 12-in-1 unit at a friend's gift exchange. The thing has been on our coffee table for the last year collecting dust and the other day as i sat and watching the latest episode of Sherlock i had an epiphany. Could this be turned into the simplest bar top arcade ever?  The answer is YES! Yes it can.

This project should not take away from my main arcade project, that i know for sure. I don't want to have a million things that are all half finished, so i plan to stay the course even if that means this silly small endeavour takes until Christmas 2014. I'm in no rush here.

Controls: Groovy Game Gear Leaf switch joystick and buttons.
Display: RCA 15.6" LED LCD TV (almost a shame to use such a perfect tv on a simple build)
Computer: None! I can use the internal board of this Plug & Play.
Cabinet: Planks of Ash hardwood stained grey. Tinted glass for the display and marquee cover. 2"x13" neon "Namco" logo for the marquee.
Electronics: Hack the TV buttons to the cab. Maybe an SLG Mini and a Composite to VGA adaptor. Surface transducer for speakers.
Front End: None! The Plug & Play already has everything i'll need.

Design Goals:
-Minimal complexity and costs.  ...oops.
-Plexi bezel. Glass bezel.
-Custom vandal switches for power, display, and marquee. (Possibly on the CP or back panel)
-Removable external power plug.
-Modified "Weecade" Plans. (reduced by 12.25% in size)
-2"x13" neon sign in the shape of the Namco logo in the marque.
-Vinyl/Leather wrapped metal CP.
-No external screws, wooden dowels for connecting cab pieces.
-Magnets for removing the back panel, and possibly CP.
-Rear C14 power receptacle
-Rear HDMI port

Control Panel:
-Two buttons, One Stick.  ;D
-a pair of smaller buttons for volume up and down.

Games List: Built into the Plug & Play.
-PAC-MAN
-PAC & PAL
-PAC-MAN PLUS
-PAC-MAN 256
-SUPER PACMAN
-GALAGA
-DIGDUG
-BOSCONIAN
-NEW RALLY X
-GALAXIAN
-XEVIOUS
-MAPPY

Design steps:
1. Planning, sourcing, materials (Mostly done)
2. Hack the Plug-n-Play (Check)
3. Finalize Cab design (Check)
4. Cab Construction/Electronic installation
5. More Beer & Video games

Current Roadblocks: 2014.05.27
1. Time
2. having the custom wood planks made.
3. Having the neon light made.
4. designing the CP and back panel, then finding a fabrication place to make them.

Like i said before. Don't expect this one to be quick. It's kinda something to do just when i feel like putting time and money to it. That being said, i'm sure i'll let this thread make it on to Page 2 of this forum quite quickly. If there is any progress you can follow it here in this thread or on Instagram with the hashtag #ChancesArcade2

A couple volume up/down buttons for the TV.  Dark tinted glass for both the Marquee and display.  I've had some custom switches made for power, the Display, and the Marquee.  Without a computer and with such a thin LCD panel i'm going to have a ton of room left over too.

This is all just a theoretical plan. May change in time.

Cool idea.  That Namco plug-n-play is actually surprisingly fun.

Ok, gonna base this thing off modified Weecade plans.

Thinking an elongated back with an integrated plexi covered shadowbox like compartment showcasing the old Plug & Play enclosure surrounded by a "Showdan" style Pac-Man "electronic virus takeover" design.

Again, more spitballing.

Also, found this:

http://videogamecritic.com/vgc_genclassic.htm

I'm not really a SEGA fan, But if someone was to be so inclined i'm sure it would also made for a bad ass Weecade/Bartop build. And i'm sure those wireless controllers wouldn't be hard to modify for wired power.  The fact that it accepts Genesis carts could be integrated into the exterior of the design along the base of the control panel or something.  Looks like they go for like $50 on ebay/Amazon etc.

Not my cup of tea. But would be a bad ass build for anyone out there wanting to tackle it. I'd even help with the design of the cab artwork if someone wants to build it...

I thought of this same idea early on. I was going to use an lcd from one of those old dvd players, gut it all and put it in a midway/namco style mini bartop. I know someone designed a really nice midway/namco inspired bartop on the forums a few years back. Perfect for this style of mini project.

Also, i have one of those genesis units. I also have the ultra rare sd card cartridge along with it.  ;D

Those things are awesome!

...you should do a small tear down of your Sega system and take some pictures of it to see if it's viable to do a mini cab with.  ;D ;D

Of course you can use it in a cab. or a mini cab for that matter.

Sweet! Thanks.  That's pretty cool.

Yep, with mono audio. So I'll need a powered VGA to Composite adaptor.

I made a bartop a couple of years ago for Christmas based off a plug and play, it was a pretty big hit. I've actually got 4x of that newer model (emulation is great, menus are nice, very good for a cab), 4x 13" Tvs, 4x controls (going to use LS-56s with octo gates) stashed away to make more at some point but the project keeps getting pushed back in the queue.

Save for the unfortunate omission of Ms. Pac Man, these Pac Man Connect & Play units + old composite-in TV is a great way to get a solid Namco classics cab together on a budget.
Completed projects: Pac bartop (Plug & Play), 30th Anniversary Pac cab (MAME), Point Blank (PS1), Centipede (arcade hardware- light restore), VS. Super Mario Bros (arcade hardware- light restore) Tetris Cocktail (SNES), Arcade Classics upright (60-in-1, then MAME), Multi-Raiden (arcade hardware). Pac Man vs.(Gamecube),

Working on: Pinball Re-theme, Homebrew arcade arena shooter

Dammit, I had a Sega one of these laying around for years and now I can't find it.   :censored:

I also happen to have an unfinished bartop sitting on the bench waiting for guts.

This may be the perfect solution.  That thing's been staring at me for months.

Hahaha, AJ, you've been b*tchin about that bartop in so many threads. I think you should just tear your place apart looking for it or buy a new one cheap on Amazon/Ebay. Just get it done.  Like I said, I'll even throw in some photoshop work if you want.

If you did that 2 player Sega with the wireless you'd probably want to redo the CP to accommodate the other controllers or make a matching wireless fight stick using the built in wireless feature.

Couple things:

1.) I've been lazy
2.) money
3.) when I have the money, I don't seem to be able to find a 19 in 1 horizontal board kit for it.

Here is another one. There are a few more out there on the interwebz. I don't personally have a problem with this stuff. What i do take a little issue with is the total lack of mini cabs that look grossly unfinished.

Another with a slightly better build quality

arguably the best. Mortal Kombat

ah that's right, I remember you made one some time ago. Forgot all about that. One of the better, more polished looking cabs using them. All this talk of using one makes me want to crack mine open.

Nice to see they're still refusing to make a Genesis with RCA stereo output.  I rocked that stupid headphone jack adapter for YEARS.

yeah, i had the same issue with my original genesis 1 unit. Sega sorted that out with the genesis 2.

You can always donate the bar top to the cab-less SaveThe404 Charity Foundation.  Your donation of just one bartop will bring gaming nourishment to a child's life. ;D

In all honesty, they don't emulate sound that great. They are pitched a few octaves too high. At times it gets down right annoying. I have one and while I appreciate it from a novelty and collectors point of view, it's not even remotely close to the genesis hardcore gamers remember.

If you are on a budget, you are better off spending that money on a second hand pc mobo/cpu and drive combo to finish up that great looking bartop.

yeah, i had the same issue with my original genesis 1 unit. Sega sorted that out with the genesis 2.

Genesis 2 was for poor kids that liked watching copyright messages.

So it looks like i have three options for the stick here:

http://groovygamegear.com/webstore/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=65&products_id=365
http://groovygamegear.com/webstore/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=65&products_id=402
http://groovygamegear.com/webstore/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=65&products_id=403

I'd like to swap out the ball top if possible for an orange one. But it looks like that may only be possible on the first option. Not a must, but it would be nice.

Buttons I've chosen for sure will be these:

Just haven't decided on colour so i'll order a couple or each (White, Yellow, Orange)

I really don't think anything is wrong with it. I think it's funny as hell. Mind you I'm also not the most sensitive person on the planet at times :D

 :laugh2: thats fantastic!

I'll use that as a case study for when I sell it. I mean ultimately it doesn't matter. I do what I want.

You're in Calgary, so it's probably not such a big deal. In Vancouver, (aka Hongcouver) that name probably wouldn't fly...

I too think it's funny as hell, but I also think real Yellow Fever is hilarious. There are many HAGAWG's here (Hot asian girl, average white guy)...actually, I think that name would actually be pretty funny here too. :D :lol

No joke, I Just now realized the racial connection. I was thinking it was insensitive to people who've contracted the virus... http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yellow_fever

Done. I'm keeping the name. :D
