control panel question...
« on: December 31, 2013, 02:33:57 am »
I have a dynamo cab with a goofy control panel... it's got 4 buttons on either side of the sticks in diamond shape. 2 player cab... i figure I can use the sticks and the 4 buttons to the right of it for the games, and the 4 buttons to the left can be insert coin, exit game, maybe volume or menu or something... but my issue is that it has this vinyl stuff on it i'm having a hell of a time scraping it all of... control panel is metal... would it be possible for me to just spraypaint it once i get all the vinyl crap off and use it as is with no plexi or anything? think it'd wear too fast? I really don't feel like paying someone to cut out plexi for me.

Use a heatgun to clear off the existing vinyl, clean down the control panel to nice shiny metal.  Ideally you would then Install new vinyl.  But you can hit it with paint designed specifically for metal and then a clear coat.  Paint will wear down over time but if done well should last you at least a couple of years before you have to redo. The trick is to allow time for the top coat to cure.

where could I buy said vinyl for the control panel? It's one of those cut corner panels from a dynamo hs5... not looking for anything specific to the layout, just generic (non marbled lol)

edit: i'm leaning toward using black appliance epoxy, then I don't have to deal with plastering more vinyl on only to have to remove it later and i'm assuming it would be pretty durable, and it's made for metal... anyone else try this before?

Nope not tried the Epoxy,  I can't see a reason why it wouldn't work though.  Just a case of getting a nice even coverage.  As for the vinyl it depends on where you are in the world.  Do a search for 3M Vinyl, You can even go down the Carbon Fibre Vinyl route,  this will work quite nicely, I used it to cover the top/back of my machine, but there is no reason I couldn't have used it on there too.

Heatgun and scrapper, I also used a little Goo-Gone, then clean metal with water thoroughly. Might just wanna sand the piece down to bare metal. Prime it. Paint it. Use a heavy use clear coat. Can get vinyl from eBAY.
