USB mounted connectors - forum post?
« on: December 18, 2013, 04:49:07 pm »
Hi all

I've been looking for ages trying to find a forum post that had some suggestions for something like this (not JUST this, mind - a few other alternatives):

Struggling to find it and search terms like "USB" are a bit too broad for narrowing it down it seems.

Is anyone else cleverer than I am and able to link me to it? Sorry to be so pathetic at tracking this down!

I purchased two of these. They were not cheap ($21.99), but are of excellent quality and look great! Mount them in a hole just like an arcade button. The cover not shown is just a rubber cover that is attached to the unit so you don't loose it.

You can buy Neutrik NAUSB-W-B feedthrus at Focus Attack, Allied Electronics, or Mouser.

They also come in nickel. (P/N NAUSB-W)

Perfect PL1, I think those are the ones I had in mind. Thanks for putting the part number too, much easier to track down!

Thanks everyone else too, most useful.

I second these.  I put one or two each on my games that have a PC in them.  Some machines I put one in them and run a USB to a 5V charger on the power strip so that I can attach and power USB toys and such to my cab.

Yeah I figure they're ideal for attaching gamepads and particularly keyboards and mice for when some PC admin is needed. I'm planning a slimline cabinet so don't want to house any of these things inside it if I can help it.

I think the Neutrik are the best looking out of them and they are simple to install. On top of that it looks natural rather than having to contrive a way to install them in the cabinet.

USB extension cable, a small slot in your desired panel and some hot melt glue.  If you want to get fancy, you can add a faceplate, but just a simple slot would be less obtrusive.  Very inexpensive and not too difficult to do.

As said above, but I went the fancy route and used 2 button hole plugs that I had on hand.

good day.

I definitely agree. and Neutrik makes great products.
go with the neutrik pass throughs as PL1 showed. they're easier to install and won't look hacked.

This may be, but they aren't very attractive for a finished surface.  Something about a square connector jutting out in a hollow round housing that throws the aesthetics of it off.  Maybe it's just me :)

Just put them on the back/bottom instead of the front -- out of sight, out of mind.   >:D  :lol

Neutrik also makes the SCDX covers in several colors.

The Neutrik connectors are cool... Only problem is they look like ass.  After a search high and low for something that looked nice, I ended up just buying solder mount connectors from mouser and cutting a square hole in the back of the box:
