need help with mortal kombat themed party games
« on: December 03, 2013, 11:00:45 pm »
my soon to be 5 year old son decided that he wants a mortal kombat themed birthday party(i'm very proud). initially, the party was going to be at our house, where i have two mame cabinets that could have been used for mk based entertainment. however, my wife decided to move the party to the kid's karate school. this gives us more room, but takes away the arcade cabinets.

i need to come up with some mk themed games for the kids to play.  he wants dodgeball, so we will have liu kang fireball dodgeball. we will also have pin the tail on motaro. i need at least one or two more games for the kids. there will be some older kids from the karate school, as well as family and friends...but also a group of 4 and 5 year olds from his preschool class who probably have no idea what mk is.

any ideas?

Don't forget the ESRB rating of MK is...  :o

J/k. Hmmm this is a tough one. MK is all about kicking butt and then murder. Hard to find something that won't offend the other parents! Best Lui Kang scream contest?

Fatalities!  ;D Maybe you could use the chain and hook move of Scorpion to create a little game. Throw the hook and reel in a prize. (Edit to add: If they win a prize use the sound sample of scorpion "Come here"!)

May I add that you deserve the father of the year award!

I got a good Idea.

Get some foam slabs and color them like wood, stone, metal, other materials and have them do a hand chop like when you play the game. The more foam slabs you break the better prize?

Test your Sight is an obvious easy one to re-create. Goro shaped pinata? I'm sure there's a way to work duck duck goose in there (ninja, ninja, cyber ninja?) Freeze Tag = SubZero Tag.

Thats all I got.

Great ideas guys...keep them coming.

They have re-breakable plastic karate boards at the school they use for breaking practice, we could probably use those for test your might.

http://www.karatemart.com/rebreakable-board

I like sub zero freeze tag. The goro pinata is a great idea, I'm just not sure I have the ability our time required to make one. I'll research pinata making this evening.

MK sound bites would take it up a notch.
Have the actual "test your might" clip play before each kid tries to break boards.
"Excellent" would also be good.
EDIT: "Flawless Victory" would also rock!

In a pinch, just play Techno Syndrome from the MK soundtrack.

EDIT:http://web.archive.org/web/19991007062714/fighters.simplenet.com/mk/archive/wavs/
also came across an android app on google play, but no idea if it's any good.

The "only $1" stores usually have some ninja stuff.
Probably some kind of party favors there to hand out.
They probably have some type of throwing stars you could make a game out of.

I didn't think about it before, does letting my 4 and 6 year old kids play mortal kombat make me a bad parent? It isn't like I'm letting them play gta.

I was 12 when the first mk was released, my little brother would have been 6...we used to play it all the time and it didn't seem to have any negative impact on him.

My wife called it a ninja party in the invitation for his preschool class, everyone else will be told it is a mortal kombat party.

Note I need to get to work on starting the giant motaro on poster board, and learning how to make a pinata

Let's put it this way- when the Mortal Kombat issue of Nintendo Power came out, my mom stapled those pages together so my little brother couldn't see them.   :laugh2:

If you have the kids doing a real life fight club with fatalities, then yes. If you're letting your kid have a party themed on something he likes then, whats so bad about that? Mortal Kombat is pretty tame by today's standards, unless you're Chaddles.

Since they started karate class and started competing at tournaments, they have been really into the fighting games on the arcade cabinets...the mmk series being their favorite. We were all set for a tmnt party until about 2 weeks ago when he said he wanted a mortal kombat party. Personally, I don't see the harm in it.

Thinking as an adult, hearing about a mortal kombat themed, with games, birthday party sounds like a blood bath.

Thinking as a 5 year old, hearing about a mortal kombat themed party for kids is probably about costumes and karate.

With that said, the adult in me says:
1. put a fake heart in a fake dummy bust and have those kids rip it out Kano style

More proper MK themed ideas for kids would be:
1. Costumes or finding someone to dress up like a character be at the party
2. Make like a little bridge with foam spikes to walk across like the bridge level or something.  Maybe an MK themed obstacle course?
3. MK music, MK pinata, etc all good ideas
4. Bring an arcade to the karate place to play MK?  Can you take blood off for the other parents to not worry?
5. It is in a karate studio... maybe a MK colored dummy to practice sweet kicks and punches on for the kids?
6. Bobbing for apples in green water like the acid pit?

Can you rent some of those inflatable sumo suits and let them beat each other up?  Your neighbors would probably buy tickets to watch that.  I would.

The parent in me says ~5 is too young for MK but I don't like to judge others for their parenting so best of luck.

Just keep is very kiddie and harmless so other parents don't flip out, in this situation I think many parents certainly would.

Oh..there are definitely no plans for anything involving violence, death, blood or dismemberment at the party. Other than the decorations and games being related to the game it is your run of the mill birthday party.

I think its a great idea. I know you could have a great MK party without the guts and blood. You will definitely need to get some dry ice or a fog machine though.

You could make it a little more kid friendly, maybe..  Make a Jello mold of a chest and put one of the big chocolate valentines day hearts in it.  That sounds like more fun than a pinata, but still may be a rated M.

For a pinata, simply buy a normal one and then put your own graphics over it with a color inkjet printer and a glue stick.  You can easily modify any one.

That would be cool, although I'd probably just take one of my mame cabinets. I don't know anyone with a truck though. It would fit in our minivan, but wet need the seats in it to get our kids to the party.  My neon isn't big enough to haul a cabinet, or even all four of my kids at the same time.

I am considering taking the control panel off off my 2 player cabinet and connecting it to my laptop and using that, but then I have to worry about it getting broken by the random little kids.

A timed competition Obstacle course sounds like a fun idea.  Use of a trampoline in there somewhere. A low balance beam over fake foam spikes (with possible swinging foam blades). Bagua lotus posts crossing  (coffecans filled with cement placed in a dice's 5 pattern),   Dive thru a fire hoop...etc.

 Other ideas...

 - Hire some local "Wushu" guys to do an acrobatics martial arts performance:

 - Hire a Chinese Dragon team from a local Chinese martial arts school, to put on a show.

Rent an inflatable bounce tent.  Kids love to jump.

 Other event ideas...

 - Pole stab accuracy test:  Hang a small bell or tennis ball from a string.  Standing from behind a line, they get a certain amount of attempts, and accuracy is logged.  Either something like 3 for 3, or 10 of 10... or hold a competition that widles down.. or simply just do it for fun.   Weight can be added to the pole front as an additional challenge.

 - Jump Kick challenge:  Using a trampoline, run, jump, then kick a foam ball or handheld paddle.  Raise height as everyone passes it... Highest kick wins.

 - Subzero Limbo slide: Using a slippery +1mm thick plastic sheet, like a slip-n-slide...  wipe it with Formula 21 to make it super slick without need of water.  With socks on, have them get a mild run start... and try to slide under a foam pool log thats on an adjustable height holder.

 - Karate Champ Bonus round test:  Using foam balls, launch them at a kid thats in a circle.  He much not exit the circle.  He can jump, duck or use a punch / kick to use against the attacks.    Could also try this using a 4ft pole as the only means of defense.

 - If you cant bring a full coinop in... (im pretty sure the dojo wouldnt mind it being in the school a few days prior... if its set to freeplay ;)  )    You can bring a console such as a Genesis or Snes.   You can wrap it in a dressed cardboard box with controllers sticking out.   I did this for a Halloween party at a Pizza Hut I was working at, in my youth.  I had Ghouls and Ghost on a Genesis, and it was a huge hit.

 - Try to make at least one game / event, a Teamwork event.   Teamwork is important to help them realize the value of their friends... as well as to give them great memories.  It also imparts that martial arts are for protection of loved ones, rather than the purely self related pumping of the ego.    IE: Help rescue Liu Kang (or a fellow child), using teamwork.. before he gets lowered into a pit of acid.

Edit.. More stuff as I think:

 - 4" thick foam board, and rubber coated throwing stars.
 - Archery event, using small kids bow / toy bow

Party is actually this coming Sunday. I've got a lot to do between now and then. I've got one layer of paper mache done on the piņata, in going to try to get the second/final layer done tonight so I can paint it tomorrow night.  I still have to trace/color motaro onto poster board this week as well.

Oh good, my two cents.  Didn't read all the replies so if its there already pffft!

We do a picture wall at every kids party, do a scene from MK and have the kids pose in front of it and take shots of them doing a finishing move, whatever they like, the crazier the better.  Then get them printed and put the pic in the thank you cards from the party.  Parents will love getting it, kids will love doing it.  We do simple ones out of foam board and poster paints, should be a 3 hour throw together max, huge dividends on that too.

i used my projector to trace motaro on a sheet of poster board, and then printed out some tails...it is very light because I used colored pencils to shade it in...it didn't come out as good as I would have liked, but I was out of time. The party starts at 2 today, so it will have to do.
