32" 16:9 vs 27" 16:9 LED monitor! Help me decide.
« on: December 01, 2013, 07:54:41 pm »
Planning and planning. Those of you with LCD/led monitors, what size are you using?  I'm worried that a 32" will be too large in a cabinet.  This cab will be designed with more modern steam gaming in mind with a healthy dose of the classics.

Anyone with a 32" want to give me their opinion?

That looks great Brian74!  Have you found yourself asking if you should have went larger?

32" will be too large for a standard cabinet.

I purchased a 27" widescreen. Figured it's big enough that vertical games would still be large enough. I can't really imagine being that close to anything larger.

@Brian74, what is the width of your control panel? I'm curious. It looks great so far!

I couldnt go any larger because if the width of the cabinet. I have about a 1/8" on each side. I went with the Samsung because of the response time and the magic angle adjustment. It made a big difference when standing back to play light gun games.

14"x36" it is just a temp to see if I like the button layout. I used the astro city layout, and I have to say, it works great. My cp artwork is getting worked on, so soon as he finishes it, I will make a new one.

My 32" TV is great in the cocktail table- the dualscreen layout gives both players still a 21" equivalent display. When used as a single screen in horzontal mode- it really depends on the game: if you need to watch the entire screen (enemies approaching from all sides) it is a bit big. When playing a game like Street Fighter IV where you focus on the characters more, the big screen is awesome.
The latest (non-cocktail) cabinet I've built has a 27" screen and that looks and plays excellent. So If I were to choose: 32" for cocktail (because of vertical orientation), 27" for a standup cabinet.

Thanks for all of the replies guys!  I intended to do a cocktail, but it's looking as if a stand up is what I am going with.   A 27" monitor it shall be!

Its a pita that you can't get any large 4:3 monitors I.e non wide screen.
Biggest I could find was a 20" - dell 2007fp

Widescreen cabinets look stupid.  Build a pedestal, throw the biggest LCD you can afford on the wall.

Already bought the 27" monitor.  LOL.  I'm going to do some strange things with this build.  It wont be the stereotypical cabinet as I do agree a widebody/widescreen traditional cab looks a little odd.

I know you already bought your 27", but man am I happy with my 32".  I custom built my (unfinished) cab, and it just looks and feels great.  Playing Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition is just wonderful.  Classics still have a huge screen area and vertical games look great as well.

WIP picture of my cab:

27" is still a great size and I'm sure you will be plenty pleased with it. :)

That does look great!!  Anyone using U360s with Steam games?  I know big picture mode defaults to 360 controls with controllers. I'm just trying to figure out how steam plays with the U360. ;)

I'm excited to build this bad boy. But lots of steps to go. Btw, got my 27" Aoc monitor for $120. Had a 50 buck best buy certificate and used it on a Black Friday/weekend sale !

I too went with a 32" screen, and personally couldn't see it any other way. I find it hard to look at 4:3 cabinets now. But the 32" screen if the cab is built properly looks better than a 27" 16:9 with regular arcade cab dimensions. When you try and put a widescreen in a cab that was made for a standard size there is just too much open space on the face of the cab.

As you can see, there are those who like their 32" TVs.  It's a personal preference right, as build what you want and what you like.  If someone else doesn't like it so be it.  Be happy with what you build/design.

Personally for me, anything larger than 27-28" in a stand up cab is too large.  I've played on 32" stand up cabs and it's so massive it hits you right in the face.  Dimensional-ly it just doesn't feel right to me.  32" and larger should IMO roll into Showcase cabs or Pedestal/wall mounted TV cabs.

Do also remember that a cab to house a 32" tv will be super wide and could have problems fitting through doors as most houses have between 30-36" doors depending on frame and age of house.  You can most of the time tip the cab and still get through but it's something to remember.

Kahlid brings up great points. I just buy 20.1 inch 4:3s and everything looks great, but I'm not running anything widescreen on it, either.

I look at it like this- I wouldn't watch TV a foot and a half away from a large widescreen TV, so why would I stand there and play games on it?  :dunno

I completely get those points.  Thank you for raising them for future readers of the thread.

I was looking at Aesthetics primarily.  a 32" Widescreen presents a 27" 4:3 screen.  My main concern was building my cabinet with a 27" screen and then when 4:3 games pop up, they look too small.  However with my newfound interest in playing Arcade like Steam games... a 27" is perfect in widescreen mode.

My cabinet is going to be a sawed off stand up horizontal.  Aka what americans would have made if they had thought to make candy cabs.  I am going with a CPS2/3 and Gauntlet hybrid in design, only lower to where everyone can be seated.

Check the viewing angle from the bottom side of the monitor before finalizing a design.  (Mine sucks)
Depending on your monitor, you may not want to lean it back much.

I have a 27" widescreen and wouldn't want to stand that close to anything bigger.
To each their own though.

A LED screen should has a very good viewing angle compared to LCD screens.
