Mame question on processor power
« on: November 25, 2013, 09:36:43 am »
I'm looking back at MAME right now and hopefully someone can answer this...when did MAME start requiring a beefy processor to run?  I remember a few years ago you could run it on an old 300mhz machine and it ran great.

At least 10 years ago.  I was playing Galaga and Amidar on a 486 and it ran great back around version .36.  All hail "accurate emulation."

Ok so around 2003?

I'm trying to find the version number.

MAME .37 was the last one to support just about any video card, IIRC.  I believe the performance drops kicked in around .56

One of the big leaps was v.107 when they overhauled the video engine.
A lot of people run v.106 because of that.

IIRC, I used v.80 on a 600mhz machine and it played the classice fine, but choked on 90's games.

For 300mhz, I think you're getting back there to v.37 or something.
Look for rom sets meant for cell phones.

I've got a copy of DOS mame 36 with all the nags/error messages removed if you'd like a copy.  Send me a private message if you want it and I'll hook you up.  Even though forum sponsors openly sell illegal artwork and multiboards, and our resident MAME dev has admitted that the MAME license is complete BS, it's frowned upon to post links openly.

Hmm we don't appear to have a thumbs up button other wise I would give you one. It really is a strange hobby as far as what people find OK and what they frown upon after pirating 50 gigs of illegal games.

Sent from my Nexus 4

I'm not sure what your point is supposed to be here.  Downloading roms is also illegal and you also can't post links to roms here.  Mame is NOT illegal, so we try to comply to the license agreement out of sheer respect and nothing more.

Although I've often questioned the legality of reproducing artwork (it seems to be in a gray area due to many of the copyrights expiring) I don't think anyone is openly selling illegal multi-boards.  If they are they should be banned, not so much for the legality of it, but for putting out an inferior product.  ;)

Also you guys seem to be confused.  Many of the rules on this site in regards to what you can post are done for legal reasons, aka lets not get Saint, sued or violate his ISPs license agreement and have the site pulled.

To answer your question as simply as possible mame started requiring a beefy processor to run when it got better.  I've got .36 on an old gorf because I just can't justify fixing the boards atm and I'll tell you flat out.  .36/.37 are fine until you use a modern build and realize how crappy it is by comparison.  At that point the sega drivers are still iffy, I don't think cps2 games have been added and even games as "classic" as pac-man and gorf have emulation issues.  Now the two things aren't directly related, but it's worth noting that despite what the nay-sayers are spewing, newer versions of mame generally are noticeably better.

I just don't get people not caring about accuracy.  Isn't the whole point to play the original arcade games?  If you don't care about that then pick up some of those tv-plug-in-play games.  They aren't even close to the originals, but they look and play sort of the same so that's good enough by that logic.

Well - there is 100% accuracy and then things lower.

If the game is 99% accurate and playable to the end.  Thats fine with me.  If one or two pixels are in the wrong place...  meh.  If a sound is wrong at one random point in the game.  meh.

There seems to be a "if its not 100% accurate its complete garbage" mentality around....  that's what I don't get.

Well I have not seen anyone get sued for having a Mame rom so game on!

I used to have this "stick up the bum" for ripping off copyrighted material, but with a medium such as the internet it is very hard to police.  Mp3 and Cinema infringements are completely different, but 30 year old games would have by now been in the spotlight.

Again it is based on your own morals and ethics and the needs of the many......  ;D

I know Haze has a problem with xx-1 boards and I do agree that it is naughty of the Chinese manufacturers to sell them.  He doesn't have a problem of cracking encryption protection and enabling a game to be playable for the masses, so his stance is hypocritical at best.

Linking game roms is not allowed and rightly so.  You would have to be a moron not to be able to find them on the internet.

Speed wise I like 36/37 on portable devices and 84 (CoinOPS) and 139 for modern PC use.
If I had only one wish, it would be for three more wishes.
