MAME 127
« on: November 22, 2013, 09:33:47 am »
IM RUNNING MAME 127 WITH GAME EX AND JOYSTICK AND BUTTONS WORK IN GAME EX MENU UNTIL I SELECT A GAME AND GO INTO MAME. I TRIED HITTING TAB IN THE GAME AND ONLY DIP SWITCHES AND COUPLE OTHER NON RELEVANT CHOICES COME UP. I THOUGHT ANOTHER MENU SHOULD COME UP FOR USER INTERFACE AND PLAYER CONTROLS. I CANT OR DONT KNOW WHERE TO LOOK FROM HERE TO ENABLE OR PROGRAM NOT ONLY ONE GAME BUT ALL OTHER PLATFORMS. I CHANGED FROM SLIKSTIK TO ULTRASTIK AND I ONLY CHANGE I MADE WAS TO DISABLE SLIKSTIK IN GAME EX SETUP MENU. THANKS

Lets use our inside voice.
I'm not sure why tab isn't showing Controls (general) or controls (this game).
But have you looked into the mame.ini file in your mame directory. Maybe the new stick comes up as a joystick and that would need to be enabled in the ini to get the controls working.
What flavor if mame are you using, command line, mameui, etc?

In the mame folder, isn't there a slickstik cfg file that may need to be removed.
I'm not sure as I've never had either of those sticks and I've never seen the tab menu not work right.

And once you are able to get into settings, you're gonna want to go into controls for all games (general) and set them to the ultra sticks.

That's when you hit tab while in game

If there is a slickstik cfg, it will be in the cfg folder within the mame folder.
You also may have to delete your default.cfg and start new.

do u think deleting the default config file will fix the tab command, and how hard is it to start new as i am new but know some from messing with it, or does it recreate and you just make changes like enable joystick to 1, thanks again at least its narrowed down to that issue i really appreciate the response. ill copy that file before i delete it for a reference

by the way is there an easier way to use mame instead of command line, like the UI and get a newer version or is it to involved for what im running. ive downloaded it and messed with it on my laptop just to not mess up the files but navigation and overall beginner use is easier from what ive done so far

It really doesn't get much easier than the official binary and QMC2

I also enjoy ML TNG (MAMELOAD)

There won't be much to starting over.
You'll just need to run mame createconfig and go into a game and hit tab. Then enable joystick in the ini again.
Then I'd think you should see the normal menu and you can select controls general and set all your directions and buttons.

well I got controls to work finally but still when I hit tab in the game it only gives me dip switches, book keeping info and return to menu never get the full menu like ive seen on others should I update mame to new version would that help any going from 127 to 151 version. also only mame games work my other emulators like Nintendo and sega nothing works so I guess ill keep trucking to find out how to program those I assume its similar to the mame config, thanks for getting me this far

You'll have to go into the other emulators and change the keys to match the new stick.

That's weird about the mame menu but I'm sure someone here has dealt with it before

yeah that's why I want to update if it wont cause problems, because im updating game ex for certain bug fixes. can I leave my directories for roms and other folders the same in game ex settings or would I have copy everything and put in new settings and folders its been this way for four years and want to take advantage of new games and fixes and user interfaces. cant be to hard unless a lot of roms quit working

Updating things shouldn't give you any problems.
I'm not sure of the workings of gamex but I imagine its like all other front ends and just needs to be steered toward the directory files in settings
