Spinner or Volume knob???
« on: November 21, 2003, 09:23:24 am »
Has anyone tried to use this as:
a) a volume control
b) a spinner
c) A Mame32 navigator.

http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/powermate/tips.html

You can get it for around $30 on Ebay.

I saw it and thought of a few ways to use it, but wanted to know if anyone has any experience.  For instance, can you mount it to a surface?

It does not spin, so it would not be a good spinner.  I don't know of anyone who's tried it for anything else.

It won't work as a spinner but it could potentially be used in some spinner games. It would work with ikari warrior type games to rotate and fire. It could be used as a steering wheel for games that used a 270' wheel. For the cost though you could just buy a spinner.

user action send key what it does
Rotate Right     Alt+Right Arrow moves to next frame
Rotate Left       Alt+Left Arrow moves to previous frame
Click                 Spacebar play/pause
Click & Rotate Right     Ctrl+Alt+Right Arrow next clip
Click & Rotate Left       Ctrl+Alt+Left Arrow previous clip

Ooooh maybe it will work for frontline! Time to make a CP with swappable spinners! :D

So this would be a paddle, not a spinner.

Saw this thing a long time ago on www.thinkgeek.com .  I don't see anywhere that says that it doesn't spin 360 degrees.  Also, I dont think you can set it to work as the mouse anyways.  It says you can program it to do "any key press combonations (if you keyboard can do it, this thing can do it)"  so I don't think you can program it to act as a single axis of the mouse... :(

ok... here's the deal...

I got one before... and it looks cool....
and material is nice.....

there's only 1 problem...

it sucks as a spinner....

it does spin 360.... you can keep on spinning in either direction... and yes... you push the thing... that is a button...

but if you use it to play mame.... its wayyyyyyyyyyy toooooooo slowwwwwwwww......

like for Arknoid.... you'll need to spin I donno how many full rev if you need to go from 1 side to the other....

just wayyyyyy tooooo slooowwwww to be even close to be playable... and I tried email customer support.... not much....
so... I ended up returning it....

good luck.... maybe with new drivers.... etc you can get lucky...

tried everything....

including increasing / decreasing sensivity to huge / tiny values.... somehow its just not playable....

--------------

1 thing worth noting....

this thing can be used in PC and Mac....

and in Mac... theyhave a "mode" or dirver mode...
that it's suppose to act as a "temptest knob".....

but in PC... there's no such mode.... (at least at the time I bought it....)  >:( >:(

since I have a limited time for return or I'm stuck with it.... I returned it like in 5 days.....

didn't able to make it work within that time....

----------

but I have to say.... other than that wire coming out from the side (which will be visible if you install on panel top....)

that thing is very soild build....

if you want to give it a shot and is able to make it work, plz post your findings....
