Mounting LCD/Screen
« on: October 22, 2013, 01:40:42 am »
What is the best way to mount the screen into a cabinet?  More specific I'm trying to mount a LCD.    The current LCD that I have didn't come with holes in the back to mount to anything.  There are 4 screws but that is to hold the plastic casing to the screen.  I will probably remove those 4 and try to find longer screws to mount the LCD to a board that will be screwed into the side panels.  Or I may look for a wall mount and use that to mount the screen in the cabinet.

Here are other options I have considered.
1. Just leave the LCD on the stand and work with whatever angle I can get from the original stand.
2. As noted above look for longer screws and mount it to the board.
3. Get a wall mount and mount to the LCD and the board.
4. Build a brace to hold it up.

Still trying to figure this out before building or creating the bezel.

Can you provide a picture of the back of the LCD?   I have never known one not to come without the screw holes for a VESA mount.

I agree.  It sounds odd that there is no place to mount screws.  I know on most LCD monitors and televisions there are screw holes of some sort.  I know on mine monitor shown here I was able to put a piece of 1/4" mdf inside of where the stand was and mount that to a board and then mount said board to my weecade and screw it in that way.  If I have time tonight I will disassemble my weecade to show you what you mean.

I also agree with Bob.  Pictures would be great to continue the brainstorming.

Sometimes the vesa mounts are hidden by a removable plastic cover.

. . . or under a sticker. (corner holes weren't originally there)

Not sure how well you can see but those 4 screws is holding the back panel to the LCD.  I removed all screws before and looking for longer screws but none yet (I'm not looking very hard at the moment)

The bottom 4 holes if you can see them is for the stand.

Measure them. I bet they are 100mm apart. I believe you are looking for M4 screws, the length of your mounting board plus the length of the current ones in there.

Those 4 screws on the back of the main monitor look like vesa spaced screws.  They should be removed and as eds1275 said they should be 100 mm apart.  You will not find longer screws the short screws removed from the back of the monitor allow longer screws that come with the mount to go into these holes.  There are no screws provided with the vesa mount on the monitor just appropriately spaced screw holes.

So should I get a wall mount to use inside the cabinet or should I just get longer screws?

I just used a board on mine. It's hidden, no need for it to look good.

Yep. Just like Knievel did on the Woody. You can see the four screw holes in the board. (Reply #70)

I'm currently building my Cab to use a 32" LCD and I've gone with a very basic wall mount. I picked up a "Xtreme Ultra-Slim" wall bracket at Princess Auto for like $13. They were $40-$70 everywhere else. i just needed a slim, basic rail VESA mount.  I figure i could mount it right to the wood, but i'm a bit of a perfectionist, and i want to make sure it mounts square, and is easy to remove if need be.  I felt that mounting to the wood i could possibly have issues with it being level when i go to put the bezel and plexi overtop.   ...I don't know, i over engineer stuff sometimes.

Thank you for all the suggestions and help!

I think I'll just get 4 longer M4 screws to mount the LCD.

I was thinking of what ChanceKJ was going to do so that if I did mount it off center I could still center it easily by just moving it slightly.  But since this is a small bartop I'll just measure a few times then drill and mount to the board.  Worst case is if I mess it up I'll just cut another board and re-drill the holes.

After mounting then I need to make a bezel.  I'm not sure if I'm doing this in the right order but I thought I'd mount the screen then build the bezel around it to get a better fit!

Makes sence to me. It's not like we're building naval warships. Just build and measure and build as you go. :)
You should see how our warships are built. Not as well designed as you would expect. ;)
