Launching Stella in Mala
« on: October 07, 2013, 09:45:10 pm »
I am having trouble launching Stella in Mala.  I can launch a game just fine when I launch from within Stella, but when I try to launch from Mala, it says "Starting..." and then does nothing.  I have the correct rom path entered.  I'm guessing I don't have the correct command line in for Stella in the Mala settings.  Does anyone know what the command should be?  Or any other suggestions?

Thanks!

I'm sorry but I never have used this emulator.
I'm not sure but I think that this emulator runs with this command line:

Code: [Select]
stella.exe <romgame> -fullscreen -fulres
You could test from a msdos windows.

Greetings!

I'm not a user of stella, so I really can't help. But, unclet has the best set-up guide for MALA and it includes instructions for non Mame emulators.  I've got my Mala setup running Mame and Nestopia. It was pretty painless to set up while following his guide. Check it out here;

This command opens up Stella, but it's just a blank black screen.  It's as if Stella doesn't know which game to open up, it just opens up...

Check your rompath.

Can you post it any screenshot of your MALA configuration?

Greetings!

Rom path is correct.

It's truly surprising that no one here knows what's going on!

From the limited description you've provided, the only surprising thing is you thinking someone could magically provide a solution.

Please provide screenshots of your configuration, as requested, and maybe someone knowledgeable will see something that could help.

Whoa friend!  No need to get hurtful!  I simply need more detailed instructions.  I'm not good with this.  Exactly what Mala configuration do you need?  Where can I find that?

Of course I will be willing to answer any questions and provide any information I can to resolve my problem...

No worries. Maybe my response was a bit heavy-handed. I'm just finding lately that people are coming in, giving little information, and then commenting about how people are non-responsive, or unhelpful.

I - for one - don't know thing ONE about Mala, personally. If there's a configuration program - somewhere you recognize that you have entered your information (probably the place you mention the ROMs are entered) then that's probably a good place to start. Screenshot that, and post it up when you can. I'm pretty sure someone with Mala experience will be more than happy to chime in with more support.

Good luck!

I'm racking my brain here and still can't figure this out!!!  Unfortunately, I follow the guide in the thread above and it still isn't working.  When I click start on a game in Mala, it says "Starting..." and the does nothing.

I will gladly try anything anyone suggests.  I just want to get this working!

Earlier in the thread it was asked that I post my Mala config.  I will gladly post this if I new where to find it.  Like I said before, I am not very good at any of this, but I can follow directions if given to me.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Yes!  I can go into my ROMs folder and open a ROM with Stella and it works fine.  I can also open a ROM from within Stella and it works fine.

Please, could you put screenshots of the Stella emulator configuration in MALA?
I'm sure that the problem is in your command line in MALA.

In my case, the games only work with a26 extension.
In your rom extensions appear bin,a26,ini. Check putting only the a26 extension.

That didn't work.  :-[

I did however discover something.  Out of discouragement, I just started going down the list in Mala, trying to launch any game.  Low and behold there are some games that will launch.  I would say about 5% of the games will start fine.  I checked to see if I could see any differences with these ROMs, but I can't find anything.  The games that play are bin files, but most of my ROMs are bin files.  Why are only a small percentage of my games playing???  I can launch all of them perfectly outside Mala...

I think you should take a closer look at the rom extenstions.  Why is ini in there?  Probably because Mala automatically picked it up when it scanned the rom folder path.  You need to put in only what extensions you have on your roms in that field.  You are probably picking up .ini files for individual games and stella can't start those because they aren't roms.
If it were me, I would make sure all my roms are .bin, then switch emulators to mess, but that is my preference.  You should at least make sure your roms are all .bin, IMHO.
Never met a game I won't keep.

I have tried entering only bin, only a26, both bin and a26.  Nothing works (except a handful of ROMs).  It looks like most of the ROMs I have are bin, and there are some a26.  I'm not sure why ini was in that field.  I had been using z26, and I couldn't get the keyboard controls configured, so that's why I'm trying to use Stella.

Are the keyboard controls easy to configure with MESS?  I would give it a shot if I knew I could configure the controls...

Check this from your command line of "msdos". (Win+R and write cmd and press enter)

Code: [Select]
c:
cd c:\emulators\Programs\Stella\
stella.exe "c:\Emulators\RomFiles\Atari2600\<gamerom>"

Replaces <gamerom> by a real name of a game.

Tell me if it works fine or not.

From MALA, you can enabled de debud mode and post here the mala.log file contents.

Greetings!

As you can see in the image, I attempt to load Asteroids, but it does nothing...

Empardopo, I entered everything into msdos that you asked and the games launched fine...

Well, I fixed it.  I'm not completely sure, but I think what happened was I selected "Audit ROMs" in Stella.  And when I did this, it changed all the names of my ROM files.  Luckily I backed my ROMs up before doing this and simply put the old list back in the ROM folder.  They are all working now!  I'm so glad this is over.

I appreciate everyone who attempted to help me...
