  • I want to build my own arcade controls!
Hi. So it turns out that making a basic (but hand-picked) Mala gamelist is extremely time consuming and painful. I just want a list of maybe 100-200 games that are the classics and favorites. But to find the working version for each game ends up taking 3-7 minutes per game and that really adds up.

Any chance anyone has done this already and could upload a copy for me? Surely, I might still edit it some... add my favorites or take off something that I don't like. But to have a starting point that has pacman and galaga and all would be great.

I'm using Mala and Mame 0.143u6 with a corresponding rom set on a 3-sided 4-player cocktail.

.....Or..... Am I missing something...

Thanks Thanks Thanks!
Roger

You are missing telling people what controls you have. 3 sides just tells me you can do vertical and horizontal, and nothing more.
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

Use romlister to filter down a set to just the roms you have, then filter that further to get rid of those genres you don't like (shmups, sports, mahjong, etc). Filter further to get rid of games that require controls you don't have.

You should end up with a relatively short list.

From there, hand picking a list of a few hundred games shouldn't take terribly long. I wouldn't try to do it all in one go anyway. Half the fun of mame is coming across great roms i've never played before.

I’m assuming you’re using the “game list” utility that comes bundled with MaLa, and if so, I agree it’s a pretty tedious process to make a list of any appreciable length.  Not only do you have to scroll through the thousands of games, but it’s not always obvious which ROM goes with which game—especially ones that have multiple versions.

One feature I just discovered recently in MaLa is that if I hit my player 2 start button, it brings up a menu of some nice features, including the ability to add a game to a list from right there within MaLa.  I think you still have to create the list itself in the other utility, but once it exists, you can dump games into it from the main game-selection interface.  This way, you can be sure you know exactly what games and what versions you’re adding to the list without the trial and error.

I’ll second what the other poster said about the fun to be had in discovering new games.  If all you do is play the same old Galaga, Asteroids, Donkey Kong, Dig Dug, and Pac-Man you’re really missing out.

if you do use romlister, i want to point you to an unreleased beta that i've been kicking around.  lots of bug fixes, but it could use some more testing.

Romlister combined with CFG Magician are the best tools you can use for making lists and configuring your games as painlessly as possible.
