Joystick Mounting

I've been researching the best way to mount joysticks, is it to recess the mounting plate on top or underneath?  I'm using 18mm MDF for my CP and would rather underneath, what are your experiences?

Depends on your joy and shaft legnth.  If the components are different then each cp is a bit different as well.  Whatchya using?

One big difference is that if you mount from beneath, you'll be able to remove/replace the stick later. mounting from above means ripping up your CP art to do that.

Mounting underneath typically means routing out a little bit, and then using a longer shaft.

yeah thanks guys, this is what I figured, mounting underneath is my choice, have brought the sticks yet any recommendations!

Some sticks were made to be mounted in wood and some were made to be mounted to thin metal. You can route out some of the wood to make it thin enough to mount some of the metal panel sticks, but some just won't work well. I ended up having some metal mounting plates made to solve the problem.

Just about to buy some long shaft sticks, I'll route out about half of the 18mm MDF and mount from underneath.

Wow. Pauls solution is really nice. insert nuts work pretty well do, but I like those plates.
