Dual Arcade Controller project [FINISHED]
« on: May 25, 2013, 04:45:02 pm »
I started this project almost a month ago. The goal was to build an Arcade Controller with dual joysticks and 6 buttons which was not too big to carry around.

For the project i used a TEKO 364.8 box: http://www.teko.it/en/prodotti/famiglia/PU/serie/103

The left joystick is an 8-way joystick, the right one is a Mag Stick Plus (switchable 8/4-way from the top)

I used a MiniPAC encoder: http://ultimarc.com/minipac.html

The red front button acts as a "shift" doubling the functions of the joysticks/buttons and used for actions like "Insert Coin", "Player 1 Start", "Save State", e.t.c.

Looks great!  The enclosure is nifty, two questions i) where did you order it from (just saw specs at your link) and ii) are the corners "sharp" as they appear in the photos?

I am glad you like it.

Got the box from an electronics shop (in Greece): http://venieris.com/

The edges are sharp indeed! They pose no problem while playing as your hands rest on the panel (i used low profile rounded screws to mount the joysticks so your hand can rest on them without any problems)

That's really neat! Cool usage of that enclosure, I like the artwork too. Looks as good, if not better, than some commercial fight sticks.

Thanks! I would prefer a black box, but only the grey color boxes were available...

If you still want it in black, you could use Rit Dye or spray paint for plastic.

An interesting idea with this box is that you can create replacement panels with different controls/layout/artwork.

The panel attaches to the box by 6 screws and i connected the cables on a removable pin header which clips on the encoder. So you can easily make a new panel (with a spinner for example) to replace the existing one as needed.

To make it even easier you can replace the 6 screws with 6 small magnets. You need to buy a new metal plate (besides the plexiglass & other arcade controls) for your new panel, but you will reuse the existing box and encoder (a cost of about 60€).

Are the boxes available for purchase online?  Could only find specs at the link you posted.

This is the first of 3 controllers i plan to make using the same size and type of box. The next one will be spinner + trigger stick and the last one buttons + trackball.
