TV too heavy?
« on: May 21, 2013, 05:40:05 pm »
I'm looking at building my first cabinet, and want to use a big old CRT screen. My control panel is shaping up about 33" wide (is that too wide?) and I don't like them sticking out so was planning on making the cab to match. But TV's that big are REALLY heavy and I'm concerned about mounting it. Am I being over-cautious?

I would make sure the case is strong enough to hod the weight, then get it up there. (get help)

Worse case scenario is it crashing on the floor sending shards of glass everywhere, which you will be picking out of your feet for a few months.

I know that TVs of that size do not like to be moved around so find a spot and plop it in the cabinet.

My Outrun2 with a 39" monitor tipped the scales at upwards of 800 pounds, so definitely install it into the cabinet where it will live (or close to it).  And as others have mentioned, make sure you engineer the mount so it's capable of sustaining the weight.  Also, in your cab design, keep in mind that it will be top-heavy.

Another option is to hunt down a flat-panel TV. Granted it will cost some money, and will be widescreen (meaning vertical games will be pretty crummy), but if you're going for mostly horizontal games it would probably end up being a safer bet. Now if you really are wanting to do an old CRT, as others have said make sure that bad boy is secured really good. The last thing you want is to one day here a tremendous crash from your arcade machine.

Get a smaller TV and build the cabinet around it like a Mortal Kombat cabinet.

33" is a bit large. Why is it so big?

I'm a fan of nostalgia and CRT's in general but my problem with TV's are they were never really designed for cabs.  So can you use it?  Sure.  Is it the way I would go?  Maybe not, depending if I had money for an LCD.

How big is the CRT?  Your control panel at 33" inches isn't huge but it would be big for only 2 players.

33" is a bit on the large size, particularly for a 2 player machine. My 4 player Gauntlet cabinet has a narrower panel than that.

33" was just based on a template I found on the Internet

I'm looking for a smaller tv (I really want a CRT) and will make a narrower cab.

Nothing wrong with big screens, but they lend themselves far better to a showcase cabinet.  You can get away with large control panels a bit easier with that design as well.

I wouldn't go larger than 27" for a standard cabinet.

CRT monitors can be real beasts, especially if you are looking at the later generation HD models.  I have a 27" sony trinitron that weighs in at over 100lbs.  The 32" version of that is going to give the Hulk pause.  A larger tv is going to grow your cabinet depth substantially also...
