Button cheat sheet or labeling
« on: May 01, 2013, 12:12:35 am »
For those of you who have lots of games (I'm assuming most who've built a cabinet), and especially those who often have friends over to play the games, how do you keep track of what buttons do what for each of the games?  Obviously single button games are pretty straightforward, and for console emulators there's a one to one mapping that's constant to the controller so all games will be the same.  But once you get to the multi-button MAME games it seems like it gets pretty easy to forget.

I remember using an Arcade Legends 3 cabinet, and when you started a game, before it loaded it showed you a quick help screen displaying which buttons did what.  Has anyone done anything like that or have any other suggestions on how to keep it all straight in your head and easy for visitors to figure out?

CPWizard would probably be the go to application.  It allows you to create a layout and then show what buttons do what.  I believe you can run it on a 2nd screen or have it come up before a game launches or when you pause.

RGB LED buttons, PACLED64, and LEDBlinky. Only active buttons light up for each game. You can check it out in the Two-Headed Beast thread in my signature. LEDBlinky can even speak which buttons do what function for each game.

CPWizard looks awesome! That's exactly what I was looking for. That should be a sticky thread.

LEDBlinky is very cool, but I'm not planning on having lit buttons.
