Dumb question about button config
« on: April 04, 2013, 06:56:59 pm »
Maybe I should put this here instead of in Audio/Jukebox/MP3 forum...... :banghead:

Hey everyone, after finally finishing my basement remodel, I am in the final stages of getting mame setup configured.

One question I have is, do I need to setup button configs for each game I have listed?  I see there is a universal button setup, but it seems when I go into a game, the buttons don't work.  Now if I load the game and go into the button config section for just that game, the buttons will work fine.  I was hoping I could do a global setup so button 1 is button 1 on all games, button 2 is button 2 on all games etc etc.  I can't seem to get that part to work....or would I not even want that since different games have different layouts?

Thanks,
Peja

I'd clear out my CFG folder and then open a game in MAME, enter into the menu, got to input(general) and set your controls for all the buttons you have.  Then you should only need to alter games that need specialty control mappings.

Awesome....thanks for the reply Le Chuck.  I will be trying that tonight after work.

Much appreciated.

AHHH That makes sense -- Any game that had already been configured prior to changing the general input would already have the default configuration saved to it's specific gfg (was wondering why some games would change correctly while others didn't and hadn't put the 2 together !)

Also is there a generic layout for buttons within mame that satisfies most games?  Such as:

six button config (even though most games won't use 6 buttons):

 456
 123

or

123
456

I guess it all depends on the person and my rig is a standard 6 button layout.

Thanks,

123
456

This layout will give you the least amount of remapping on games using 4-6 buttons.

You may also want to custom config all the popular titles. Like I have Galaga set so that every button shoots and it is controllable from either player position.
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

Thanks for the replies everyone.  I ended up clearing out my cfg folder and remapping the buttons per PL1's suggestion.  Everything seemed to work great.  I only tried 2 games since I was strapped for time all weekend....Ms. Pacman and DK.  I will try some games that actually use more buttons next time.

That is a good idea about customizing games like Galaga paigeoliver.  Probably quite a few games you could do that with.

Thanks again everyone.

definitely do this.
i use a two person streetfighter layout (single joystick with six buttons)
If the game is a one button game, I remap all six buttons to that one action.
galaga, dig-dug, zaxxon,  tapper. This save much confusion with new players and especially my young kids.

You may also want to custom config all the popular titles. Like I have Galaga set so that every button shoots and it is controllable from either player position.

I use cpwizard so as soon as a game starts all the buttons and actions are shown on screen
