Monitor mounting - options?
« on: March 29, 2013, 04:41:59 am »
Instead of mounting the monitor to the cabinet, wouldn't it be easier just to mount it to a monitor arm secured to a piece of wood, or even one of them portable monitor floor stands?  I was thinking then that those 2 options can allow for easy movement/change of angle as necessary since there'll be a pivot mechanism to both options.

When first looking into building a machine  I was looking at using a low profile rotating monitor bracket mounted to mdf. As it is I found a unit that holds monitor and PC so used that instead.  In short there are many ways of mounting the monitor, it all depends on what you want to achieve.  Mine works perfectly as if I want to transport the unit I just pull the entire computer and monitor out of the bartop and voila, instant weight reduction.  I personally would not use a monitor arm,  they never seem to stay where they are meant to and the ones for a 21" 4:3 monitor are huge. (Although if the monitors on those arms ever become available from work I'm taking them all  :duckhunt )  They also need a lot of support as ultimately all the weight is transferred to the 4 fixing screws.  This means you need to use a fairly hefty support piece.  By the time you have done all of this its just as easy to work out where you want the monitor mount a piece of mdf and use either a low profile mount or directly mount the monitor to that.   The Floor stand would probably be easier to modify.  But once you go down that route you may was well build a shelf and plonk the monitor on that.  Most monitor stands nowadays allow forward/back tilt, up/down adjustment. And in the case of Dell/HP monitors there is usually an option to rotate 90 degrees.

As Drnick stated it really depends on what you're using and what you're doing.  I'm a fan of using wall mounts attached to a 2x6 or 2x8 connected to the cabinet via furring strips.  Then if I don't get the angle quite right the mount allows for a little tweak.

If you don't feel like spending ~$90 or so, you could directly mount the tv to a piece of mdf or wood, and then mount that piece of mdf/wood to 2 supports which are attached to the inner sides of the cabinet.
