Creating MaLa gamelists
« on: March 01, 2013, 02:15:27 pm »
I'm working on updating my arcade cabinet, and I can't remember how I created my genre game lists for MaLa. I have a list of games for each genre and just want to create a MaLa gamelist for them. Short of going into the Mala Gamelist Editor and selecting them by hand, how can you do this? I know I did it relatively painlessly before, but not I can't remember how I did it...

ROMlister is awesome.
I've made a ton of lists on that.
From gun games, to games suited for my cabinet (1 button less/vert).
Even refined a list to show only Nintendo games.
Love it !

I'm not in front of my Mala machine right now so I'm probably not reciting this correctly, but just look in the Options menu for something to do with gamelists. There you can create a new list name and then add games to it. It may prompt you to then launch Mala Gamelist (?), an external program that compiles the lists. Sorry this is loose report. Poke around. If you still can't find the answer, post back and I'll try to be more specific. It can be done. Not too tough.

Romlister is another option can can export lists (large ones as needed).

More praise for romlister.  This is how I do all my lists, quick, easy, accurate.

I have and use RomLister, but only for MAME. Is there a way to use it for other emulators? I just need to create Mala game lists for all my other emulators using arbitrary lists of rom names.

thanks for the romlister praise.  makes me happy that all these years later, it's still useful.

for other emulators, look at the very first sticky post at the top of this subforum.  The one about romdir2XML.  there's a special romlister that has that ability built into it now.

Since there aren't really any catver.ini or controls.ini type lists for other emus (that I'm aware of) the amount of searching/filtering you can do for non MAME stuff is basically limited to whatever is in the filename of the rom itself.

I think what I need is the mlgconverter mentioned in the stickies, and create .ini files for each gamelist I want. My intent is to parse the Hyperspin genre .XML files and then basically convert them into .mlg files for Mala.

yup, I'm the fuzzyRename author as well.
I have an unrelated programming project I'm working on right now, but as soon as that is finished, I have an outstanding feature request to get romlister to be able to save+load lists it creates.  that's been in the queue for waaaay too long and it needs to get done.
anything else you guys wants while I'm dinking around in the code?
