Need help identifying a game
« on: February 12, 2013, 04:19:02 pm »
ok so co-worker is asking me about a game he played late 80s or early 90s, probably late 80s. Top down view, main guy had a whip or chain? He recalls one level where you went up the side of a river and killed armadillo beasts?

VanDyke maybe?

unbelievable. That's correct. I sent him to retrouprising and he's playing it at his desk, happier than a pig in mud.

thanks!

YW

Although to be fair there are only so many top down fighters, and by your other descriptions I assumed a medievlish theme and there are only three of those that I can think of and of those three only VanDyke has a morning star weapon that I recall.

Here's to Arcading at work!

Holy crap, you're good!

So once again, we find that evil of the past seeps into the present like salad dressing through cheap wax paper, mixing memory and desire.

Here's a near miss in more ways than one.

Gaiapolis

Probably would have been much better known if only the weapon attack was not so awkward.

In the spirit of growing your games list I will give you a couple that I think people might have guessed

First the way offs

1) Athena: Hey she can get a ridiculous ball in chain.

2) Black Tiger: Morning Star? Check. But no gamer worth his salt would ever have forgotten the name of this one.

3) Haunted Castle: Since this is from Konami and evolved into one of the most famous platformers of all time lets rule it out shall we?

Intellectual responses

4) Dark Seal or it's sequel Wizard Fire: The Knight character in these isometric treats shuns the cliche sword or axe for a bad ass flail.  What? I got tired of typing morning star. ;D

5) Dungeon Magic: Isometric fantasy bliss. No morning star but hell if the blue warrior had it he wouldn't use it.  He's far too busy pretending to be in Final Fight!

6) Dyna Gear: definitely a flail but side-scrolling and Dino baddies so unless those armadillos are ankylosaurus forget it.

7) Rygar:  This one has the armadillos, the flail, and the NES version even had some top down as I recall.  But again I question how anyone could forget the name of this one.

8)Gaiapolis: One of the three I narrowed it down to, because it's a true top down fantasy game. All that's missing is the flail and the armadillos

9) Kyros:  Another of my three, although much less of a fantasy theme, more zombies and such. but it is top down fighter and well that at least puts it in the running though no morning start and the fact that it blows goats rules it out.

10) VanDyke:  Has to be this one.  The morning star is one of if not the best weapon in the game, its top down, and there very well could be Armadillos, though I've not made it past the stupid Medusa yet.
