Starburst auction Nov
« on: November 04, 2003, 01:23:52 pm »
Although I don't like to post auctions (keep other mamers from driving up my cab prices ;D)  I would be interested to know who is going to this auction this saturday and if we should have a local byoac handshake session?

I'll be going--probably with my brother and maybe one of my buddies.

I am probably going.  Not 100% sure yet though.  I should be pretty easy to spot, I'll probably be the only teen with a bidding number.

If I go it'll probably be to spend the day in TO more than anything else.  I've got more cabinets than I can handle at the moment.

If any of you do see me there, plz say hi.  Then I can write it in my article =)

Usually lots of young guys bidding at most auctions. And when you talk to them, you find out that almost all of them are planning on building Mame cabinets (and far too many of them end up buying unsuitable machines, or machines off the first row (most expensive stuff, usually all dedicated too).
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

I was hopeing to go but it looks like I will not be able to get the day off work.  All I really wanted was a cabaret ( I beleive that is the term) for mame conversion for 1 player games, oh well, there's always next time right?

Working on a Saturday?  That's too bad.  I booked it off work, so I'm good to go...probably.

You mentioned you're looking for a cabinet for a conversion.

I have one for sale you may be interested in.  You can take a look at it here: www.jbprojects.net/mame

E-mail me if you're interested and I can deliver it if necessary.

Ya, working for family sucks LOL, anyhoo, I looked at your cabinet and its not too bad, how wide is it? I need something 24 inches or narrower for where I want to put it, but may be able to change my plans if the price is right.  I know there is no chasis for the monitor and the joystics/boards are gone, is there anything else left in it?  Do the coin mechs work or are rebuildable?

I might have a couple joysticks you could use.  Not board or chasis though.

The cabinet is 25.5" wide.  My other 19" cabinet (my mame I'm working on) is also 25.5", so that's proabably a standard and I doubt you'd find anything smaller.

The coin mechs are brand new and working great.  They take canadian quarters.

E-mail me: jon@jbprojects.net for additional info and price.

I don't have any prices other than a star wars sit down with some rom problems with a good color monitor for $350 and a metal slug X with a non-working 25"monitor went for $250, two california speed sit downs in good shape went for around $1100 ea.

there were some okay games there nothing i couldn't live without though (except the star wars--too big though :'()  lots of area 51's for the 300-400 range and a pacman cab converted to some noname rally game--looked like original paint was intact underneath but pretty beat up otherwise--it went for 200 or so i think.

next auct. dec. 13th

menace:

would you say the previous one was better than? did they have 2 room fulls, or no?

I always wanted to know where they get all these machines from.  I assume its the actual dealers selling their old stuff, and starburst just getting a percentage of the sales.

If that's the case.. what's stopping the seller from being there and shilling up the price bidding against other real people?

I think this is what actually occurs.. this is the only way I can explain seeing some machines being at the same auction a few times, and both times being "won".. (and you can easily tell it's the same damn thing!!)

prices were higher and selection was lower--there were also 2 machines that were there from the last auction--I rember distinctly because they were #1 and #2 on the block the first time around--as far as dealers driving the price up--it could be, there's no one as noticeable as mr do rag but it wouldn't surprise me.

Although after seeing prices at some of the auctions due south, I'm surprised alot of people from buffalo and detroit areas don't come up--no tax and 30% off with the exchange.

totally agree with you on that one.  I stopped by this one to take a quick look but dident bid on anything.  I am particularly interested in the pinball machines, problem is its the only things that still make money for the vendors so they usually go for alot.

The being said I have only been to 3 auctions, but have seen the same 5 or 6 pins.  Now they could be different, but it seems weird that the same models keep showing up.

They had 1 pin, an older 1 (late 80's).  It was the only non-dot-matrix-display model there, and I am wondering what it finally went for.

there was an older pin that went for about 750 if memory serves--the others were in the thousands.  Oddly enough my better half would gladly make room for a pin in the house--if I could only get that zeal for another cab ::) shame they are so expensive though..

Realistically speaking,

what does a good pinball machine go for in the GTA area if purchased outside of the auction?

Because this is the only thing left for me to get for my future dream gaming room... (in my future dream house.. damn housing prices!)

they are cheaper at the auctions based on any looking around i have done--they had a beautiful dracula pin that went for 1500 CDN--its like 2500US everywhere else i was looking.  star wars pins are the only ones i have seen that fetch auction prices similiar to what you would find outside with the one advantage that all sales are in CDN $ as opposed to US$.  Go there with intent to spend 1500 + tax and you are almost guaranteed one.

I was there.  I met a couple people from the forums.  Chris and a guy named Jonathan.

I've got a pricelist and some pictures which I'll be posting on my website within the next couple days.

There was only about 96 machines this time, as opposed to about 130 last time.  Things went for a bit more this time than last.  There was an original centipede which was interesting and also a moster ball in a defender cab.  If you're dying to know what something went for, I'll look it up.  If not, I'll be posting it on my site pretty soon.

Check out http://www.xmission.com/~daina/classified/index.html .  It has a good mailing list with 25-30 pins added a day, sometimes from the Ontario, NY area.  700 bucks can get you a decent pin with most of the bells and whistles (speech, multiball, ramps and so on).

I've posted a Mini-Article about the auction on my site as well as the pricelist.  When I took the photo of the pricelist, it didn't turn out so well but it's fairly legible.  If you can't read it, e-mail me and I'll try to get another pic up instead.

The article and pricelist can be found on my website www.JBProjects.net

I'd be interested in any feedback you guys have, good or bad.

So does anyone know what it would take to cross the border to the United States with a couple video cabinets? Do you have to pay taxes or import duty or something? Will they even let me cross with them? The auction prices looked attractive, Toronto is only about 6 hours from me.
My statements are my own opinions. They have the value that the reader gives them. My opinion of my opinion varies between foolish and brilliant and these opinions often change with new information.

As long as you declare them as personal property and not used for commercial gain, its very easy to cross--although you will get some odd looks  ;)  Also, be prepared to show a receipt--doesn't have to be the actual receipt just a receipt declaring what it is, condition (hint non working) and price paid.  If you are over for more than a day you are allowed up to 300 (or 500) in purchases as long as its not booze or smokes.

On an aside, if you are crossing at detroit go for the tunnel (less traffic) or cross at port huron--also less traffic.

I live in canada and work in detroit so I've crossed more than a couple of times.  As an american you'll have more trouble getting into canada empty than getting into the us loaded.  The opposite is also true--I used to live in chicago and those illinois plates breezed us through customs one way but not going into canada--"any weapons to declare, any drugs, no radar detector, did we mention guns yet?"  Kind of funny actually  :P
